Lessons Learned from 90 Consecutive Days of LinkedIn Posting

Lessons Learned from 90 Consecutive Days of LinkedIn Posting

Note: As I approach 180 days of daily posting in a few days, I'm recapping my first 90 days.

The Starting Point

On New Year's Eve, I took the leap and got out of my comfort one. I decided to post daily on LinkedIn in 2021. For some, this may sound ridiculous. But for others, stepping out and showing up daily is uncomfortable, but necessary.

They say action breeds clarity. Here are the lessons learned so far.

1) Don't overthink, just take the first hard step.?

I agonized for months on daily posting. I told so many people I knew I should be posting after commenting hard for 9 months. I got tired of hearing myself. At some point, we have to stop talking and start doing. It was time to step out or shut up.

Lesson: What a waste of time and missed opportunities, I *definitely* should have started sooner.

2) It gets easier each day.?

Yes, some days I'm not into it, but sometime in month two I actually started to enjoy creating daily content. My goal is to educate, inspire and give back. I'm posting weekly videos now too.

Lesson: Each day out there grows like compound interest.

3) People first. Posts second.?

Build that community first and grow a network that will help and support you. I can't tell you how many times I've written in posts: "LinkedIn is a community, not a social media platform. I prefer to call them my community, friends whom I would have never met without LinkedIn."

Lesson: When done right, LinkedIn is no longer a boring resume and recruiter site. It's the place to find your community, your support system, and also your friends.

4) Investing in people pays off

Comment on every. single. post. Even when it takes longer. People appreciate you and this starts warm relationships. The Law of Reciprocity is the key to success on LinkedIn.

Lesson: Comments are content and the best place to show your personality and insights. I've met incredible people in the comments section and even landed clients there.

5) You'll never know who's watching or whom you'll meet.

About 97-99 percent of people on LinkedIn are lurkers (aka learners) and don't post but love to read your posts. They're watching, learning, and being inspired by you. Don't let the lack of vanity metrics hold you back or stop you from posting consistently. The more you post, the more you'll grow.

Lesson: I've landed collaborations and clients from the comments section or in my DMs from those who NEVER comment or engage on my posts.

6) You don't have to write a huge post every time. (I'm bad about this)

Brevity is good and often needed. And rotating formats and topics are a must to keep things fresh in the feed. Stop the scroll and get engagement with an irresistible headline (opening sentence) and CTA (I call this a comment to action)

Lesson: Less is more on LinkedIn: Make your posts specific, relevant and digestible.

7) The "Humans of LinkedIn" are like friends.?

I've met people from around the world by having conversations off LinkedIn to connect, refer, collaborate and help one another.?From Australia, New Zealand, Germany, UK, Canada, I've connected globally. And yes, even someone in my own hometown.

Lesson: Where else can you find this type of professional networking and depth of people? Not in real life and not any other social media platform.

8) You can easily get caught up in the metrics game.?

The dopamine drug is strong. Keep your why in mind daily, no matter what. I admit this had gotten to me in the past few weeks. Keep your blinders on and stay focused. Consider this daily reminder: we're all on different paths at different speeds.

9) People respond better to the REAL YOU.?

?Linkedin is definitely not a boring and stuff-buttoned-up place anymore. Show your personal side and watch your engagement grow. The more personable, relatable, and humanized you are, the better.

Lesson: People respond to being you. My goal for Q2 is to open up more!

10) When you put yourself out there, the opportunities are out there

I've landed clients, podcast guest appearances, speaking opportunities, and lucrative collaborations in these first 90 days. Anyone can do this. You don't need permission or perfection. Take that first step. Get out of your comfort zone and be consistent and giving. The results will follow and grow as you do.

Lesson: You just have to put yourself out there!

What about you?

Let me know...are you considering stepping out on LinkedIn? It's never too late to get out there. And if you're already there, how has LinkedIn helped you so far this year?

"It gets easier each day" - yes! It's like building a muscle. I also find that when I'm out of practice, it's really scary taking the plunge again (like stepping back into the gym after a long hiatus)

I love this article - thank you for sharing! #9 really stood out to me... Be the real YOU. Though it is done over a screen, it is getting easier and easier to tell when someone is not being authentic, even through a simple post.
