Lessons of Leadership and Life from the Indian film “Maidaan”

The Ajay Devgn movie Maidaan unfolds between 1952 and 1962, following the remarkable life and endeavours of Syed Abdul Rahim, a revered football coach credited with transforming the sport in India.

Enjoyed a good movie after a longtime. It reminded of my dad's passion of sports, he was a coach in Asian Games in 1982.

Rahim's ground-breaking efforts led the Indian Football Team to be hailed as the "Brazil of Asia," renowned for their adoption of the dynamic 4-2-4 formation. Under Rahim's guidance, India won the gold medal at the 1951 and 1962 Asian Games, showcasing their dominance in the region. Syed Abdul Rahim died 9 months later at an age of 53 due to cancer.

From the last 62 years, Indian did not win any medal in football. It shows the power of a leader and his vision.

Here are my five lessons from the movie. A must watch for people who dream and aspire to lead and WIN!

Lesson 1: ONE Man Can Change the World!

We are all unique and special and have unlimited potential and if we are committed we can change the world for the better!

Syed Abdul Rahim's influence extended beyond the football field, shaping the development of the sport in India for decades. Rahim's tenure as the Indian national team coach coincided with a period of unprecedented success, where India earned the nickname "Brazil of Asia" for their dynamic style of play.

Rahim's visionary approach to coaching transformed Indian football, inspiring a generation of players and coaches to aim for excellence and innovation.

?Lesson 2: Life is a Playground – Play with singular focus till the end!

?If we identify our purpose and have a singular focus on our goals we become unstoppable. ?

?Throughout the film, Rahim is portrayed as a man with a singular focus on elevating Indian football to international prominence. Despite facing numerous challenges, including financial constraints, limited resources, and societal pressures, Rahim remains steadfast in his commitment to his vision. His relentless focus on improving the standards of the game drives him to innovate, strategize, and push his players to excel.

?The analogy of life as a playground emphasizes the importance of staying engaged and committed until the end, much like staying on the field till the final whistle blows.

Lesson 3: Life is a Team Sport – Choose Your Team!

No matter how good you are, you always need a team that helps you excel.

Despite his individual brilliance, Rahim understood the importance of teamwork in achieving success. He fostered a strong sense of camaraderie among his players, emphasizing collaboration, unity, and mutual support. Rahim recognized that every player had a crucial role to play in the team's success, and he instilled a collective spirit that transcended individual ambitions.

Lesson 4: Emotional Fuel Extraordinary Results!

Emotions are makes us or break us. If we pursue meaningful goal that are beyond ourselves, they motivate us to take proactive steps towards success.

Rahim's deep passion for football served as a driving force throughout his coaching career, inspiring both players and fans alike. The emotional connection between Rahim and his players fuelled their motivation and commitment to giving their best on the field. Rahim's ability to channel his emotions into his coaching and leadership endeared him to his players, fostering a strong bond and sense of purpose within the team.

?Lesson 5: We All Need a Coach!

?In order to get the best of ourselves we always need a coach, a mentor, a friend who always pushes us to reach our potential.

Rahim's role as a mentor extended beyond tactical guidance, as he provided unwavering support and guidance to his players both on and off the field. Many of Rahim's former players have spoken fondly of the impact he had on their lives, crediting him with not only shaping their footballing careers but also instilling values of discipline, perseverance, and integrity. Rahim's mentorship transcended generations, as his teachings continue to inspire coaches and players in India's footballing community today.

The movie and Rahim’s life shows the power of perseverance, teamwork, purpose, and mentorship in achieving greatness and leaving a legacy.
