Lessons I learnt from my Drama teacher

It was 2004 and we were VTU champions in MIME.

VTU champions among 120 colleges? How did u win?

We won cos Islahuddin and his team had helped!

Who is Islahuddin?

He was then a student in Mysore University.

I mean who is he?

In 2004 he had participated, directed, acted, written, and created many dramatic acts. (More about what he has become later)

What is mime?

It’s a mute stage act where we wear black and colour our face white! Act only through expressions

And how did we know him?

We did not know him.

How did he know you needed help?

Cos a friend of my friend's friend just mentioned to him

Why did he help you?

For the love of drama – I think!

What did he get in return?

Nothing. Not even a thank you.

Why? No gratitude?

Cos he did not wait for any thank you! He was on his way!

Why are you writing this 18 old story now?

Its a story of grit and perseverance - He has now directed a movie in Kannada

Background:

Islahuddin, Vishal, Jadiyappa, Habeeb, Hari, Anil, Shashi, and a few others were part of a theatre group called GPIER (Gestures, Postures, Inspirations, Expressions, Rhythm) in Mysore.

They used to come to our college - SJCE Mysore to teach us dramatics. And they used to come every day almost for a month to teach us how & what we should perform at VTU fest! When we were aged 20 in 2004 it did not seem strange.. Cos we never bothered what we or others did with "time"!! But over the years that I have thought about it - I feel more and more indebted to the team who came without a day's rest and trained us! Imagine the passion they had for dramatics - They changed multiple buses, walked, and asked for lifts from riders to reach our college. And they trained us with no expectation of any money or remuneration..

From our team, it was me, Shashank, Sachin, Dhiraj, Dheeraj, Sirish, and a couple of others who used to assemble and learn. And we did that cos we had that inclination to dramatics too.

We won at the VTU fest - First place for the act of mime among 120 colleges and we really wondered how this small little bachcha team with little experience won the first place.

2 things to learn from Islahuddin –

1.?????Follow your heart - Do what you love!

2.?????Struggles teach us or stop us – We decide!

Details of each of the above and Islahuddin’s success and lessons to learn in the coming week!
