Osho’s Enlightenment in His Own Words (Part-2)

So this is the dilemma. What to do? Desire is there, and Buddhas go on saying desire has to be stopped, yet in the next breath, they also say desire cannot be stopped. What, then, is to be done? This creates a profound dilemma. People are in desire, certainly. You say it has to be stopped — fine. But then you say it cannot be stopped. What can one possibly do?

The answer lies in understanding desire. You cannot force it to stop, but you can see through it. Just observe the futility of desire. A direct perception is required, an immediate penetration into its nature. Look deeply into desire, see it for what it is, and you will uncover its falsity. You will realize it is non-existent. The moment this realization happens, desire drops away, and simultaneously, something fundamental within you drops away too.

Desire and ego are intertwined. They exist in a coordinated dance. Ego cannot exist without desire, and desire cannot exist without ego. Desire is nothing but the projected ego, and ego is the introjected desire. They are two sides of the same coin, two aspects of one phenomenon.

The day desiring stopped, I felt profoundly hopeless and helpless. There was no hope because there was no future. Nothing to hope for because all hope had proven futile—it led nowhere. Life felt like an endless loop. Desire dangles like a mirage before you, constantly urging, "Run faster, you will reach." Yet no matter how fast you run, you never arrive.

This is why Buddha calls desire a mirage. It is like the horizon you see around the earth. It appears real, but it is not. The faster you run towards it, the farther it recedes. The slower you approach, the slower it retreats. Yet one truth remains unchanged: the distance between you and the horizon never decreases.

Similarly, you cannot bridge the gap between yourself and your hopes. Hope is like the horizon—a dream, a projection. Desire acts as the imagined bridge, but because the horizon is unreal, no bridge can truly lead to it. You can only dream of crossing that bridge, but in reality, you remain disconnected from the non-existent.

The day I looked deeply into desire and saw its utter futility, it simply dropped. I found myself helpless and hopeless. Yet, at that very moment, something extraordinary began to happen. That which I had been striving for over countless lives—something I had desperately worked towards but never attained—began to unfold effortlessly.

In your deepest hopelessness lies your only true hope. In your utter desirelessness, you find your ultimate fulfillment. In the acceptance of your tremendous helplessness, the whole existence suddenly starts supporting you.

Existence waits patiently. It observes you struggling and does not interfere. It can wait eternally, for it is timeless. The moment you stop struggling, the moment you drop all effort, the moment you disappear as a seeker, existence rushes in, fills you, and for the first time, life truly begins to happen.

For seven days, I lived in a state of profound hopelessness and helplessness. But alongside these feelings, something new and extraordinary was arising. When I say "hopeless," I do not mean it in the way you might understand the word. There was no sadness, no despair. On the contrary, I was deeply tranquil, calm, and centered. Hope had disappeared, and with it, hopelessness too.

This was an entirely new experience—being without hope. It was not a negative state. Though words fail to convey it, it was an overwhelmingly positive presence. It was not an absence but an overflowing fullness. Something immense was happening within me, flooding my being, overflowing into every corner of existence.

Lessons I learned From Osho’s reflection on his enlightenment, the following lessons emerge:

  1. Understanding Desire, Not Fighting It Desire cannot be forcibly stopped; instead, it must be understood. A direct perception of its futility reveals its non-existence, leading to its natural cessation.
  2. The Illusion of Hope and Desire Hope and desire are like a mirage or the horizon—always appearing attainable but ultimately unreachable. Recognizing this illusion is crucial for inner freedom.
  3. Interconnection of Ego and Desire Ego and desire are interdependent, two facets of the same phenomenon. When one dissolves, the other naturally follows.
  4. Hopelessness as Liberation True liberation arises not from hope but from being free of both hope and hopelessness. This state transcends duality and brings a profound sense of peace.
  5. Effort and the Paradox of Surrender Effort is necessary up to a point, but true transformation happens when effort ceases, and surrender takes place. In that state of helplessness, existence steps in to guide and fulfill.
  6. Non-Interference of Existence Existence (or the universe) patiently waits until the individual’s ego-driven efforts dissolve. Only then does it actively support and uplift the person.
  7. True Fulfillment in Desirelessness Fulfillment does not come from achieving desires but from letting go of them. Desirelessness allows one to be fully present, where joy and tranquility naturally arise.
  8. Positive Nature of Letting Go The state of being without hope is not negative or empty. It is filled with a positive presence, a calmness, and an overflowing sense of completeness.
  9. Transcendence of Dualities Enlightenment involves moving beyond dualities like hope and hopelessness, presence and absence, effort and surrender, revealing a unified and eternal truth.
  10. Existence Helps When the Ego Dissolves When the ego is absent, existence rushes in, filling the individual with its grace, energy, and wisdom. This is the ultimate realization of unity with all.

These lessons highlight the transformative power of understanding, surrender, and moving beyond the illusions of ego and desire.
