Lessons From Schumacher

Lessons From Schumacher

n 2021 Netflix came out with a documentary called “Schumacher”. I love watching documentaries of top performers to get a glimpse into who they are and how they think. There has always been much discussion around some of the tactics that Michael used. Some would say that sometimes it was un-sportsman-like with the tactics he used. I am not going to look at that here. One thing is for sure he was committed to winning and being the best he could be. I am going to share some things that stood out for me- Lessons From Schumacher.

Michael Schumacher is considered to be one of or perhaps even the greatest Formula One drivers ever. He won?7 world titles?(1994, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004)?

Michael was definitely not scared of a challenge. He won his first two world titles with Benneton and if he stayed would probably have won his third the year after. Instead, he chose to go to a struggling Ferrari team and take up the challenge to get them back at the top which he did but it took 5 years for that to happen.

Here are a few things that stood out for me:

  • Michael was always looking at ways of getting better, there was no place to arrive but instead just a journey
  • Michael believed in what you put in is what you get out
  • Michael used what was available to him.
  • Throughout his career he continued to level up, he never stopped.
  • Michael exploited his natural talent
  • It was mentioned by other drivers even that he had an utter self-belief
  • Michael was always the last to leave the track with the engineers and the rest of the team. He was a team player and he understood you don't get to the top on your own.

In his early years, he did everything on his own. He was the mechanic, the driver, etc. He used second-hand parts and equipment that other teams threw away. This seemed to have made him stronger. He was racing with inferior equipment and still winning.

Michael put a massive amount of effort into being the best and leveling up. In a world where everyone is trying to find the easy route and the route with as little effort as possible, it’s clear that does not exist on the road to being the best or leveling up.

To your success.
