Lessons from the Roller Coaster- TEDx

Have you spoken on a TED stage? Are you familiar with the emotions that go along with that? Have you ever ridden on the Kingda Ka roller coaster at Six Flags?
Yeah, it’s kinda like that.
Many people have asked me what it was like to go through the experience of preparing and presenting a TEDx, since my recent one at the Ferguson Public Library.
I decided to give you my behind-the-scenes answer to that question.
Quick reset (using a Clubhouse term and I have only been on that platform for two weeks. So proud of myself! Join/follow me there):
1. I did a TEDx in 2013 and found the whole experience very enjoyable. Mostly because I didn’t have a clue that it shouldn’t be!
2. But for a couple years, I’ve been thinking, “Heather, you really need to do another one. Take it seriously. And do it on something that you are very passionate about!”
3. As the universe is tricky and helps manifest things you desire at times without you even realizing it, I was invited to do another TEDx scheduled to take place on May 16, 2020.
4. I was very excited!!
5. Then that pesky little ‘situation’ (someone just used this term recently to refer to the pandemic so I’m stealing it for effect) occurred and I found out it would have to be postponed.
6. I was very disappointed!!
7. It was pushed out again- concerned. And again- grateful. And again- accepting.
8. Then in Feb '21, I received a message that we would move forward with the talk on March 13th. And somehow with ALL of that…I felt underprepared.
Ok, you’re all caught up on the backstory.
I did end up viewing all the delays as a blessing. By March 2021, my idea was more flushed out, I had conducted more research, and my passion for the topic had grown.
I wrote a script (which I never do!).
And invited experts and friends to review and make comments (only do this if you’re prepared for them to actually make comments!)
I practiced.
I got into ego mode and hired someone to do my hair and makeup (which I never do!) and realize that because I never do it, I barely recognized myself on the recording!
Then I went for it.
I could go back into ego and complain about various technical and other issues. But here’s the thing…
I said what I wanted to say.
And if even one person sees it and is empowered to make a change in their lives. To become more conscious of their beliefs, recognize that generational patterns can lead to bias and violence, and actually wants to DO something about that… I feel like it was worth it. Every single twist and turn of the roller coaster. Worth it. I'm grateful for the opportunity.
What message do you want to get out into the world? Have you found your voice? Are you scared of the climb, the turn, or the fall?
Do it anyway.
If you need anything in your journey, please don’t hesitate to email me.
Here’s my TEDx if you’d like to check it out. I hear TED likes it when their speakers increase their views, likes, testimonials, and shares. I appreciate any or all that you’re inspired to do. Much love!
