The generations before us faced down tremendous threats—from fascism to deep economic inequality. They fought tirelessly for a fairer world, paving the way for democracy, women’s rights, and equality. Here’s how their work can inspire us to act today.
Standing Against Fascism: In the 20th century, millions around the world resisted fascist regimes, often at great personal cost. From soldiers on the front lines to citizens in the resistance, they knew the stakes. Their courage teaches us that democracy isn’t guaranteed—it’s something we must protect and defend.
The Fight for Women’s Rights and Equality: Women fought for decades for the right to vote, for reproductive rights, and for workplace equality. Their determination led to policies that expanded freedoms and created opportunities for generations to come. Each victory made society stronger and more inclusive.
Overcoming Economic Inequality: In the early 20th century, the U.S. experienced what’s now called the First Gilded Age. Wealth inequality was rampant, with a few elites hoarding wealth while most struggled. Sound familiar? The response then was massive labour movements, regulation, and reforms like anti-trust laws.
Contrast to Today: The Second Gilded Age? Right now, we’re seeing a rise in economic inequality that mirrors the Gilded Age. Today, a few billionaires control more wealth than billions of people. Many of them use their influence to roll back the progress we’ve made, from weakening labor protections to evading taxes.
A Reminder of Community Power: During the first Gilded Age, it wasn’t just politicians who fought for change—communities organised to demand fair wages, better working conditions, and economic security. Workers joined unions, creating a powerful force that led to policies we rely on today, like the 8-hour workday.
We Have the Tools to Make Change, Too. Politicians, businesses, and communities dismantled systems that kept power concentrated in the hands of the few. They did it by demanding anti-trust actions, establishing social safety nets, and creating protections for workers. These actions built a more just society.
The Power of Policy: Progressive politicians pushed for change despite enormous opposition. Policies like Social Security, Medicare, and workers’ rights didn’t just happen—they were the result of citizens demanding representation. And these policies transformed lives, improving health, education, and financial stability.
What Can We Do Today? Just as previous generations faced their challenges, we have a responsibility to stand up against inequality, disinformation, and oppression. Support candidates who prioritise equality, advocate for fair taxation, and fight for transparency and democracy.
Organise Locally & Build Community: Change often starts small. Volunteering, organising in local communities, and spreading awareness all matter. Small acts add up and create momentum for bigger shifts, just as they did in the past.
