Lessons from the Open Road: Reflections on Life and Career

Two decades ago, as a postdoc at UC Davis, I developed a routine that became as much a part of my journey as the work itself: every two weeks, I drove 500+ miles from Sacramento to San Diego to visit my significant other. Those long hours on the road became a space for ????????????????????, ????????-??????????????????, and ?????????????? that continue to ?????????????????? ???? ???????????? today.
Some key takeaways from those drives:
1. ?????????????????????? ???? ??????
Before hitting the road, I always checked the essentials—fuel, tires, and oil. This simple practice highlighted the importance of preparation in any journey. In your career, laying the groundwork—whether through skill-building or networking—can save you from setbacks down the road.
2. ?????????????????????? ???? ??????????????????
No matter how well you plan, detours are inevitable. Once, a road closure led me down a beautiful, unexpected route. In life, flexibility turns setbacks into opportunities. Embrace change and adapt when things don’t go as expected.
3. ???????? ?????????? ????????????
Long drives can be draining, but a brief stop to recharge can make all the difference. Similarly, small breaks in your career—whether through a hobby or time to reflect—are crucial for sustaining long-term productivity and creativity.
4. ?????????? ?????? ??????????????
At first, I was focused on reaching my destination. Over time, I began to appreciate the drive itself—the changing landscapes and the small moments along the way. In your career, don’t just chase milestones; find joy in the daily process and the lessons learned along the way.
5. ?????? ?????????? ???? ????????????????
Long stretches of solo driving gave me space for introspection. Similarly, carving out moments of solitude in your career—through reflection or quiet thinking—can lead to clarity and breakthroughs.

Watching the odometer tick up gave me a tangible sense of progress. In your career, celebrate small wins—whether it's completing a project or learning a new skill. These incremental steps contribute to long-term success.

A long drive isn’t just about reaching a destination. The road will challenge you, surprise you, and teach you if you’re open to the lessons along the way. Take time to reflect on your own journey—you may find insights in the most unexpected places.
