Lessons From My Father

Hello, and welcome back to Beyond Buildings with The Freeman Factor.
Today, I’m sharing something deeply personal. Halloween, for many, is a time for costumes and candy. For me, it’s a reminder of my late father’s birthday and a day I use to honor his memory and the lessons he instilled in me.
Reflections on My Father’s Lessons
My dad never met my beautiful wife, Taylor or my amazing three children. Since my dad’s passing, I’ve come to realize that life is not so much about what happens to us but how we respond. His words and wisdom guide me every day, shaping how I face challenges and how I choose to live—with purpose, love, and faith.
Here are five of the most profound lessons my father taught me:
1?? Believe in Yourself My dad always instilled in me the power of self-belief. He’d say, “You can be anything you want, Logan, but it’s up to you to bring it out.” His unwavering support gave me the confidence to keep pushing forward, even during the toughest times. It’s his voice I hear when doubt creeps in, reminding me to trust in my potential.
2?? Always Have a Plan “Failing to plan is planning to fail,” he’d often say. Dad knew that preparation wasn’t optional—it was essential. He believed that consistent, disciplined effort—not sheer luck—created opportunities. His teachings about hard work and strategic thinking have been a compass throughout my journey, especially in the world of commercial real estate.
3?? Forgiveness Is Freedom One of his most beautiful lessons was the power of forgiveness. Dad taught me that forgiving others wasn’t about accepting their mistakes but understanding our shared human imperfections. Forgiveness has allowed me to embrace love fully, unburdened by past hurts. He loved the Serenity Prayer, which captures this spirit perfectly:
"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference."

4?? Love Is Everything At his core, Dad believed that love was the ultimate purpose of life. He showed me that loving deeply and living meaningfully were what made life truly rich. This philosophy reminds me that every action we take, rooted in love, prepares us for something greater—a divine purpose.
5?? Family First Above all, Dad cherished family. He always emphasized that family comes before anything else. His legacy is my commitment to the people I love, to cherish every moment, and to always be there for each other. Those words continue to guide how I show up as a husband, father, and professional.
A Poem for My Dad
In honor of his memory, I wrote a poem that captures our shared journey and the lessons he left behind:
“My dad was far from perfect, but aren’t we all, He had my back and believed in me whenever I was about to fall. What hurts the most is I knew who you were, But at times in your life, you weren’t sure. That’s okay, what you taught me is your legacy, There’s nothing more in this world that means more to me. We can’t go back in time, you taught me that. Focus on the family, and take care of those girls is what you said, I’ll never forget those last words you spoke while you laid in that bed.”
Thank you, Dad. Your spirit lives on in every decision I make, every lesson I pass down, and every time I choose to act from a place of love rather than fear.
