Lessons from the Mayor

Not since amalgamations in 1994 has the Victorian local government sector experienced such a high turnover of CEOs.  There is a major level of trepidation that Mayors and Councillors often experience when making the decision to appoint a new leaders.  And its little wonder why.  From an organisational perspective the appointment of a CEO is one job that Council is 100 per cent responsible for, so it is critical that council and the Mayor manage this process effectively to make an appropriate appointment.  

Any Councillor who has governed an organisation led by an inadequate leader knows firsthand the agony and the cost a poor selection can create.  I have recently interviewed five Mayors from across Victoria who share their recent lessons on CEO selection and I provide some tips myself.  To access the full article published in the Municipal Association of Victoria's latest edition of CIVIC magazine please click below:
