Lessons from Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States was born on this day, 210 years ago. He led the United States through a bloody Civil War–one of the biggest political and moral crisis that the country had seen. He preserved the union, played a pivotal role in the abolishment of slavery and is regarded as one of the greatest orators of our times. But I am not here to discuss his early life and rise to power–that you can get from doing a Google search.

I find great inspiration from the words that Lincoln used, and on his birthday today, I want to share three of my favorite Lincoln Quotes and the meaning and inspiration I derive from them. Maybe it will inspire you as well when you need it the most.

I will prepare and some day my chance will come.

These words hold true in life and leadership. Each day we spend should be directed towards reflecting, learning and preparing ourselves for that epic moment. Whether it is on the personal front or the professional, there comes a time when we are thrust into the limelight and that is when we cannot fail. When we get that chance, that is not the time to prepare but to execute.

Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power.

When adversity strikes, we need to dig deep and overcome adversity. Adversity is a great test of one’s character. But an even bigger test of a person’s character is to give that person power. Power can change us in ways we can’t imagine. It is not necessary that power gives us authority over the other person but it surely can give us that perception. Do you stay humble, honest and grounded when you are given the power to decide and choose?

Whatever you are, be a good one.

This is a straightforward one! You can be who you want to be, but be a good one. We should even take it one step further - don’t settle for good, go for great!
