Lessons from the life of Ram Jethmalani

Ram Jethmalani breathed his last yesterday. He was close to 96 years of age. His career as a lawyer was 76 years. Here are some lessons that can be learnt from his life:

Start fast to reach far

He completed matriculation at the age of thirteen years, acquired law degree at the age of seventeen years. Established his law firm after he became lawyer. Got married at eighteen years. He left Pakistan and settled in India after Independence.

Healthy Life

He practiced law till the age of 93 years. He shares the secret of his lively life and fitness by saying that he keeps a company of young people by teaching law to them. The secret of remaining young is to keep a company of younger people as you grow older.

Defending the Not-worth-defending

He was one the the most expensive lawyers. He used to charge upto Rs 10 million per day. He had earned the reputation of 'Smugglers' Lawyer' by defending a sting of smugglers in 1960s. He justifies his stand interestingly, " When I see a smuggler come into my house, it's my duty to relieve him of his money."

Searching the Root

He was an iconic criminal lawyer. He said that Jinnah was not the cause of India's partition. The cause of India's partition was the old Hindu miser who refused to pay 100 rupees to Jinnah when he applied for a job in Harchand and Company in Karachi. The owner of the firm was ready to pay 75 rupees. He says that if the old man would have paid 25 rupees more, India would not have partitioned. To prove a point or solve a problem, one needs to dig the root cause of the matter.

Crusade against Corruption

He fought to bring back the black money of Indians stashed in the foreign banks. He supported Narendra Modi's prime ministerial campaign. Later, he severally criticised him for not being tough and decisive on black money.

Gratitude

He says that he is indebted to India and Indian people as they gave him everything. He had come to India with a 10 rupee note in his pocket. He says that he whatever he is doing for the society is a little attempt to pay of the debt to this wonderful country.

and last but not the least,

Family (Wives) Management ;-)

He had two wives. Both lived together with him. In a time when people are struggling to manage a single spouse, how come he managed to stay with two wives and smooch an actress in public at the age of 91. To know this, I have to read his autobiography which I will not.
