Lessons from the life of Joseph, Part 7
Conflict resolution is very difficult aspect of any professionals life, even more so for the believer. The expectation to have faith and hope is multiplied on those who claim the name of Christ by those who don't. Joseph shows a perfect example of how believers can do conflict resolution when dealing with non-believers in his dealings with Pharaoh.
First, and foremost, Joseph never forgets his Lord. In Genesis 41:16, Joseph boldly proclaims that not him, but "God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace." You might ask why I would begin here with regards to conflict resolution. The answer is simple. Man wasn't even able to solve their most rudimentary conflict. The conflict of sin and death. How could we trust their wisdom here? Countless times we see Christ de-escalating high pressure conflicts during His earthly ministry. Now that would be a great study on conflict resolution, just not today. The key is maintaining a peaceful and calm approach. Simply put, "pride goeth before destruction,.." Stay humble when entering a conflict.
Secondly, from the moment Pharaoh begins to share his dreams to the moment Pharaoh finishes. Joseph says absolutely...NOTHING. How easy is it to jump to conclusions and not hear out the entirety of a matter. LISTEN, don't worry about formulating an answer until you have heard the entire problem. Sounds simple. So few people do it though. We escalate conflict by being hasty. Watch and learn from Joseph's lead.

Next, always give out biblical counsel. The Bible outlines 4 types of wisdom we can use: Devilish, Sensual, Earthly, and the Wisdom that descendeth from above. Everything but God's wisdom serves man selfishly. God's wisdom serves mankind, not just the person. Joseph gave Pharaoh the God-given wisdom he had. The Biblical counsel was so profound to Pharaoh that he elevated Joseph over the country immediately.
Finally, give biblical counsel isn't good enough. Biblical counsel, like any counsel, has no value if not acted upon. We must take and use biblical counsel whenever possible.
You ask what does this all have to do with conflict resolution. In a word - PEACE. Conflict resolution is all about bringing peace to warring parties. God is the author of peace. Without peace and wisdom, Joseph offends Pharaoh and is killed. Joseph's wisdom superseded his bondage. Pharaoh did not see a slave or a prisoner, Pharaoh heard the irrefutable voice of God in the wisdom God gave Joseph for Pharaoh.
