Lessons From the Humble Diya: This Diwali Illuminate Your Leadership Principles ??

Every year during this time of the festivals of lights, I try to reflect on our traditions and the insights or meanings associated with the same. This time when I carelessly glanced at one of the diyas, I realized how such a small oil lamp packs significant value. Moving way beyond the spiritual and cultural values, a humble diya teaches me so much about management, leadership, and work principles. ??

As an #HRLeader, I have tried to draw several great parallel lessons between effective management leadership and a diya. Here they are:

???? Embrace the light of positivity: Effective leaders remove darkness and boost positivity in their teams. They illuminate a workspace with mindsets like appreciation, encouragement, and resilience.

?????Nurture the flame of passion: Just like the oil keeps burning the diya, an employee’s dedication and passion keep brightening the work. All CHROs and HR leaders are expected to identify and nurture this dedication and passion within teams.

????? Foster inclusivity and diversity: Whichever diya you include in your celebration (small, big, any shape, or design) adds to the overall illumination. Similarly, fostering inclusivity and diverse teams strengthens the workforce and enhances innovation and creativity.

????? Sustainability and responsibility: Everyone uses the best quality wick and oil in the Diwali diyas for its longevity. In a similar fashion, HR leaders should promote sustainable and responsible practices to ensure long-term progress and success. Practices like ethical decision-making, work-life balance, genuine feedback policy, and a focus on employee well-being must be followed.

???? Focus on continuous growth: We keep refiling our diyas to ensure that the flame keeps burning for longer. In a perfect work set-up, leaders must invest in ways to enhance skills that can boost professional development among employees.

????? Celebrate small wins: The one thing that I keep repeating is that recognition and appreciation matter! No matter how small the diya is, it illuminates the space. Similarly, acknowledging the smallest of progress or achievements can bring huge returns. Create a culture where every single big or small contribution matters!

Finally, this Diwali, I wish that all our leadership efforts illuminate the path of other employees to achieve their best work and full potential. With that, HAPPY DIWALI! I hope you will carry the joyous spirit of the humble diya in your workplace and beyond. ???????

Deepak Bansal well said - resonate with your post. While going through the post I was reminded of a story. A saint was passing through a village and soon the word went around. All the rich shunned the saint, while the poor looked after him with all their heart. The next day when the saint left he bless the rich and cursed the poor. Surprised, one of his disciples questioned him in private - why did he do so? The saint smiled and said - the poor are the harbingers of goodness. My curse will make them leave his village and spread out. Wherever they will go, they will bring peace, love and goodness, the world will change. Whereas my blessings will attract the rich and selfish to this village. They will fight amongst themselves and destroy each other. Like the saint ensured that the good spreads out to bring an overall atmosphere of peace and love; similarly, the HR needs (I agree with you) to identify the diya in the company and place them across the verticals and departments so that the entire organization shines and prospers.
