Lessons from God: Returning a car rental

Lessons from God: Returning a car rental

I have never shared anything like this but it just felt appropriate.

I took my family to the woods for the weekend and when I returned the car at the very end of the day I was told I would be charged for the stains on the seats.

These were dust stains. Like from a bag that was rolled and the wheels brushed the seat.

Not off-road dirt biking mud stains during El Nino….I have a wife and 1-year-old mind you.

It was nothing of the sort.

The irony is I was trying to run to go to a “Synagogue” (a house of worship) to make it for prayer and a lecture that was ending soon.

I got into it with the manager at the rental company and told him, “This is ridiculous, you can wipe it down with a cloth and water in 2 minutes, I rent from you every time. This company understands nothing regarding client retention.”

He said, “you can wipe it down, but we are closing soon, and if the seats are wet tomorrow morning (even if you get out the stains) you have to pay $200 for a professional cleaning. That is our policy.”

I stormed out and grabbed a bottle of water at the gas station across the street and took off my sweatshirt and wiped it down ferociously and with a bit of anger I will admit.

As I walked away with a feeling of “I told you so” and “I hope I taught him a business lesson” it dawned on me that not only did I miss the time for prayer and the lecture but I totally lost it.

I saw red.

What I could have chosen to see was, “What a great test from God this is."

Whether you believe in God or not, if you choose to live your life that everything happens FOR YOU instead of everything happens TO YOU, you will never become a victim.

You will never lose your power. You will see the opportunity to grow in each and every situation.

With an end to 2020 coming I bless everyone to end this year tapping into positivity and opportunity and running far away from pessimism and blame.

Awesome post Brian. Your story reminded me of a quote by Charles Swindoll, "Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react." ??

Brian Polonsky...super mature outlook ....crazy enough I had a similar situation happen once, except it was for hail damage on a sunny day where the car remained locally...fortunately i settled the misunderstanding, but i truly remember how angry i was at the time...again, great perspective here
