Lessons from Floods: Why Proactive IT Security is Crucial

In recent weeks, Poland has been hit by devastating floods, particularly in the south-west region. Flood embankments and flood banks, many of them old, but even some of the newer ones, failed under the pressure. Despite having retention reservoirs, flood plains, and monitoring systems in place, nature’s fury found its way through weak points. This disaster reminds us of a critical lesson in the world of IT transformation: it’s not enough to rely on existing infrastructure and hope for the best.
Multiple flood banks were built as part of the Odra basin system to protect surrounding regions. Many of these defenses were breached, but the largest and newest flood bank Raciborz Dolny has performed exceptionally well. This massive structure has been critical in flattening the flood wave before it reaches major cities like Opole and Wroc?aw, preventing potentially catastrophic damage. Its success highlights the importance of investing in modern, resilient infrastructure, whether to protect cities from floods or to safeguard IT systems from cyber threats.
In IT, I often hear the argument: "What we’re using is sufficient. There’s no need for additional safeguards or proactive measures." Unfortunately, much like with the recent floods, this mindset can lead to unpredictable disaster. Waiting for something to break before reacting is a costly mistake, both in terms of a downtime and recovery expenses.
Even with the best technology - whether retention reservoirs in flood prevention or sophisticated monitoring tools in IT - things can still go wrong. Systems are only as strong as their weakest link, and as the Polish floods have shown, unforeseen pressure can expose vulnerabilities.
What can we learn from this?
??Proactive measures are essential. Key steps include:
Things can go wrong any time. And when they do, being prepared is the difference between a manageable crisis and a catastrophe.
?? Investing in proactive security measures today is like reinforcing those walls and maintaining flood plains - it might not seem urgent now, but when the storm hits, you’ll be glad you did.

Amidst the destruction, it’s important to acknowledge the heroic efforts of individuals, organizations, and local communities who worked around the clock to protect their homes and livelihoods. Volunteers, emergency responders, military and everyday citizens came together to build flood barriers, evacuate families, and ensure safety. Their dedication and resilience deserve applause, as they demonstrated the true power of community in times of crisis.
