Lessons From The Flood: Insights From Calgary

The recent flooding events that we have witnessed across Canada, particularly in parts of Quebec and Ontario, have had a significant impact on a number of communities. As we respond and recover from these events, we should not forget that Canada, and particularly the City of Calgary, have developed a range of insights and best practices, based on their experience of the 2013 floods. On May 12, 2017, at the suggestion of Chief Tom Sampson of the Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA), I hosted a conference call to share some of the lessons and insights from Calgary with communities which had been recently impacted by flooding. A range of speakers joined us that day to share their lessons on issues such as small business survival and immediate response needs to long-term recovery and rebuilding requirements.
