Lessons from a Christian Soldier, Part 4
The life of a soldier is one of discipline and focus, of one-mindedness and dedication. Discipline and focus go hand-in-hand in the life of a soldier. Such is true in the life of the Christian business professional.
In II Timothy 2:4-5, we read the following, "No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of [this] life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier. And if a man also strive for masteries, [yet] is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully." Let's dive into the discipline and focus of the soldier Paul explains to Timothy here.

In war times, soldiers can't get caught up in the "youthful lusts" this world has to offer. To look away while in the conflict, is to be destroyed. Soldiers put away the less profitable aspects of their lives to focus on a singular goal... victory. Driven by survival, soldiers push through and persevere the hardest challenges due to an unmatched singleness of mind. Understand, in a matter of a few seconds, your best laid plans for your career and business can be torn into shambles. The true measure of any man is not in his successes, but in his failures. "A just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again." How does a Christian business professional survive the inevitable wars that will come. Focus and singleness of mind. Focus on the cross and understand that you are not being treated unfairly, nor will you fight this battle alone. He made an open show of His willingness to go to all lengths to stand beside you and bring you out of trials. Singleness of mind on the goal. What did you set out to do? What is the direction, vision, and mission of your business. They are the compass through the storms. Learn them, live them, and be guided by them. Don't have a vision or mission statement. GET ONE! Rudderless ships never reach port.
Discipline to stay the course and not let yourself wander into all the pitfalls this world has to offer is the best shelter against the storms of life. Stay the course. Philippians 3:14 says it best. "... press toward the mark of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus." PRESS ON. There is a victory to be had for those who faithfully fight the battle and weather the storms. The storm could be the catalyst to your business's future.
