Lessons from a Christian Soldier: Gentleness
We live in a world where manhood is hard to define by today's standards. Biblically, it has always been easy, but man has a way of complicating things. Today's topic is one of those things man has distorted. II Timothy 2:24 tells us that a Christian soldier must "be gentle unto all men".
Let's first discuss what gentleness is not. It is not softness or being a pushover. A man can be firm, and still display gentleness. It is not an action only, but a mentality. It is not an emotion, but a process of doing things. Let me explain.
Gentleness biblically is seen in Christ. With the power of God Almighty within him, he humbled himself. Though he deserved to be served, he served others. When others mocked and despised him, he prayed for their souls and forgiveness. At any time he could have reversed the tables in an instant, but he taught us through his sufferings. Will the day come when he will return in strength and judgement. Yes, but he taught others best through gentleness. He did what needed doing unwaveringly despite all those that rose up to stop him... but he remained gentle.
Can such a man exist beyond Christ? The book of II Timothy presents Paul as the example of a Christian soldier in Chapter 3. Paul definitely portrayed gentleness to the Jews that constantly sought his destruction.
Gentle, but firm. Gentle, but strong. Gentle, but unwavering. It is the key to leadership with difficult employees sometimes. Some people just need to see that your principles are firm before they will follow. Firm, but humble and kind in presentation.
