BIBLE READING IN CLASS
Titus 1.4-14.
4 - To Titus, my own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior.
5 - For this reason I left you in Crete, that you might set in order the things that are wanting, and from town to town, appoint elders, as I directed you:
6 - one who is blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children, who can not be accused of riot or unruly.
7 - For the bishop must be blameless as the steward of God's house, not proud, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre;
8 - but given to hospitality, a lover of good, sober, just, holy, temperate,
9 - firmly holding the faithful word which is according to the teaching, that he may be able to exhort in sound doctrine and to convict those who contradict.
10 - Because there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision
11 - which mouths must be stopped; who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre.
12 - One of them, their own prophet, said, Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.
13 - This testimony is true. Therefore, rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith,
14 - not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men who turn from the truth.

INTERACTING WITH TEACHER

Dear Professor, it is important that you understand and point out to students the purpose of Tito's epistle: Advise the young shepherd on the task of "tidying up" what Paul had left unfinished in the churches of Crete. Another important point is to know that this epistle has some special characteristics: (1) It has two abstracts on the nature of salvation in Jesus Christ (2.11-14; 3.4-7); (2) The church and Tito ministry should be built on firm spiritual and ethical foundations (2.11-15); (3) contains one of the two New Testament lists of the necessary qualifications to the ministry of a church (1.5-9; cf. 1 Tim 3.1-13). In addition to these information, to deepen them, search for good biblical commentaries on the landscape of this epistle.

COMMENT

INTRODUCTION

With this lesson we will be starting the study of the Epistle to Titus. Timothy received the commission to urge a church that was suffering from the attacks of false teachers. Tito's mission was similar to Timothy, but with a charge the most, which was to establish elders, "in each city," putting "in order" the Church. Paul shows, in the Letter to Titus, who was not just a preacher, teacher and "teacher of the Gentiles", but also a church administrator.

CENTRAL POINT

The Epistle of Paul to Titus demonstrates forcefully honest qualifications for whom it is intended pastor.

I. THE EPISTLE SENT TO TITUS

1. The intent of the Epistle. What was the main purpose of Tito's Epistle? Paul's goal was to give advice to the young pastor Titus about the responsibility he had received. Tito was given the task to supervise and organize the churches on the island of Crete. Paul had visited the island with Tito and left him there with this important mandate (v.5).
2. Date on which was written. It is believed that was written in the year 64.dC approximately. The letter to Titus was written around the same time of the First Letter to Timothy. It was probably written in Macedonia during the journey that Paul did when he was in the custody of the Romans.
3. A right living. As a minister of the gospel, Paul calls for order in the church and for brethren to dwell in the correct way, saint. According to the Bible Study Personal Application, the island of Crete was known for laziness, gluttony and wickedness of its inhabitants. By accepting Christ as Savior, the new convert becomes holy by the washing of regeneration of the Spirit (Titus 3.5), through the Word of God (Eph 5:26). Sanctification is also a gradual and continuous process leading to the improvement of character and spiritual life of the believer, making it partaker of the divine nature (2 Peter 1.4). Without holiness, no one ever will see God (Hebrews 12:14).

TOPIC SUMMARY OF (I)

The letter aimed to instruct the young pastor Titus about the responsibility he had received from Paul. The letter was written in about 64 A.D. ..

"Tito, to 1 and 2 Timothy, is a personal letter of Paul to one of his younger assistants. It is called 'pastoral letter' because it deals with issues related to order and the ministry in the church. Tito, a converted Gentile (Gal 2.3), became intimate companion of Paul in the apostolic ministry. Although not mentioned by name in Acts (being perhaps Luke's brother), the great relationship between Tito and the apostle Paul see (1) in the thirteen references to Titus in Paul's epistles, (2) the fact that he is one of the converted and the result of Paul's ministry (1.4, like Timothy), and a reliable cooperator (2 Cor 8:23), (3) for its Paul's representative mission in at least one important mission to Corinth during the third missionary journey of Apostle (2 Cor 2.12,13; 7.6-15; 8.6,16-24)., and (4) for his work as co-worker of Paul in Crete (1.5) "(Bible of Pentecostal Study CPAD, 1995 pp.1886-87 ).

II. THE PASTOR MUST PROTECT THE FLOCK OF GOD

1. Qualification of pastors. In his letter to Titus, Paul emphasizes the bishop's qualifications in relation to family, as a married man, faithful to his wife and raising their children in an exemplary way (v.6). Paul says that the children of ministers, elders or ministers, should not be "accused of riot," or of being "disobedient". In the original, such adjectives come deanupotaktos, "not subject", "undisciplined," "disobedient". The bad example of the children of the priest Eli is negative reference to the family of shepherds (1 Sam 2.12,31). Paul shows that the bishop must be a righteous, blameless person, "as the steward of the house of God" (verse 7). On the other hand, also teaches that the bishop can not be "superb", "angry man", "given to wine", "not violent", "filthy lucre" (see the mercantilists today that only work for money). Paul instructs that the worker must be "[...] a lover of hospitality, a lover of good, sober, just, holy, temperate" (Titus 1.8).
2. Believers, however problematic. Paul emphasizes the respect that the priest must have the doctrine and ministerial authority to argue with those who contradict (vv.9,10). Among the believers in Crete church, had the "complicated" and "contradict", "speaking" not rare types in churches in the present times. But the apostle indicated the way to treat them. To contradict and obey the teaching of the Word of God, Paul shows have no affinity with them because they are dangerous not only for the local church, but to Christian families, and should receive a warning and reprimand up to: "[. ..] which mouths must be stopped; who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre "(v.11). The fact that such false believers have room to overthrow "whole house" was due to the reality of the Christian churches in its infancy. They worked largely in homes of the converted (Rom 16.5; 1 Corinthians 16:19; Col. 4:15). As well as disordered, they are "talkers" and whisperers.
3. Do not listen to false teaching. Tito, provided "supervisor", establishing churches, "from town to town", he had to minister the word of edification and warning against false Christians. Should scold them vehemently. In fact, they were led astray from the truth. Later, Paul summarizes how to treat diverted and heretics, "Reject a divisive man after the first and second admonition reject it" (Titus 3:10).

TOPIC SUMMARY (II)

The qualification of the pastors, according to the letter, it is important to be seen to be competent in dealing with troubled believers.

"The qualifications of elders (1.6-9)
Qualifications in verse 6, according to the original language, are conditions or indirect issues related to candidates who are being considered for the ministry. The Greek literally translates: 'If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children, who can not be accused of riot [waste of money] or unruly' - this can be considered as a candidate for the presbytery.
Paul seems to be using the words 'elder / elder' (presbyteros, v.5) and 'leader / overseer' (episkopos, v.7) interchangeably. In this first period of church history, ministerial offices were variable and indistinct.
Paul calls the bishops 'stewards of God's house'. The stewards (people in charge of managing the business of a house) were well known to those who lived in the first century. Since such people had before the home owner responsibility to take care of this, it was necessary that they were blameless. Note also that the bishops are not simply accountable to God as his servants, taking care of the things of God "(Pentecostal Bible Commentary: New Testament 1st Edition RJ:.. CPAD, 2004, p.1509).

III. THE PERCEPTION OF PURITY FOR PURE AND FOR UNCLEAN

1. Everything is pure to the pure (v.15). Paul says that "all things are pure to the pure" (Titus 1:15), as these seek to live according to the Word of God. Those who live holy so do not see evil in everything, for your eyes are good, holy. This is a reflection of their minds and kind hearts. God has called us to be holy in all spheres and aspects of our life (1 Peter 1:15). He who rejects this instruction does not reject man, but God.
2. Nothing is pure to the impure (v.15). Indeed, for the "defiled and unbelieving," all they think and do is evil nature. The reason why "nothing is clean to contaminated" is because "profess that they know God, but they deny him by their works, being abominable, and disobedient, and reprobate to every good work" (v.16). These are hypocritical and malicious, because they say one thing and do another.
3. They know God, but deny the attitudes (v.16). Today many claim to know God, but if we look at their attitudes will see that they have never known the Lord. Our behavior reveals our faith and our relationship with God. What people learn from you to observe your conduct in the church and outside of it?

TOPIC SUMMARY (III)

The apostle warns that to the pure all things are pure; for impure, nothing is pure. Some say they know God, but denies his actions: this is entirely possible.

CONCLUSION

Administration of a church requires the observance of principles and guidelines, issued by the Word of God, the highest and best "church management manual". So Paul wrote three pastoral letters, for the establishment, organization and sound growth of the Church of the Lord Jesus.

TO THINK ABOUT

Regarding the Pastoral Letters:

What was the purpose of Tito's Epistle?
Give advice to the young pastor Titus about the responsibility he had received.

What was the task of Titus?
Supervise and organize the churches on the island of Crete.

In that year Tito's epistle was written?
About the year 64 A.D.

For that to the pure all things are pure?
As they seek to live according to the Word of God.

Why nothing is pure to the impure?
Because "they profess that they know God, but they deny him by their works, being abominable, and disobedient, and reprobate to every good work" (v.16).

The organization of a local church

According to scholars, the epistle of the apostle Paul to Titus was written in approximately 64 AD, and probably was written in Macedonia, a province that bordered Greece. Of course, the letter was written at a time when Paul was in the custody of Roman soldiers.
In this epistle, we can say that there are at least four main subjects taught by the apostle Paul: (1) The teaching on the character and spiritual qualifications necessary to all who are separated for the ministry in the church - that is, "godly" "Christian character of proven" and "successful in the direction of his family" (1.5-9); (2) stimulus Titus to teach the "sound doctrine", rebuke and silence false teachers (1.10-2.1); (3) description of Paul to Titus the proper role of the elders (2.1,2), older women (2.3,4), young women (2,4,5), the young men (2.6-8) and servants (2.9 10) the Christian community in Crete; (4) lastly, the apostle emphasizes that good works and a life of holiness God is the proper fruit of genuine faith (1:16; 2.7,14).
Through this list of requirements, we note how important it is that, first, those who feel targeted on a ministerial calling, above all, be recognized by the Church of Christ. The ministry in a person's life is not something hidden or known only to those who wish, but it is evident, recognized by the local community it serves. The ministry of God in the life of a vocation is not confirmed by one person, but confirmed and approved by the Church of Christ gathered in that local community. Vocational ministry of a chosen by God, who loves the Lord above all things, must be recognized by the Body of Christ, the local church.
But the local church is necessary to discern who is who is not designed for the ministry. For this, our God expressed his will in the Scriptures through the Apostle Paul about the characteristics of such a person must be dedicated to the sacred ministry. Christ's Church can not shirk this responsibility, because according to the legacy of the Protestant Reformation tradition: there is a priest as God's representative to the people; quite the contrary, in Christ, we are all priests, a holy nation and a peculiar people to spread the Gospel.
