One historical figure who is highly revered until today is Mangkunegara I. Many government officials or those to become officials pay pilgrimage to his tomb.

Mangkunegara was given the nickname Pangeran Sambernyawa / Soul Reaping Prince by Nicolaas Hartingh, because the Prince had brought his enemies to death during the war. Hatingh was Dutch East India Company's Governor of the Northeast Coast of Java, located in Batavia (ancient Jakarta).

He was born on 7 April 1726 in Kartasura, initially known as Raden Mas Said.

From year 1741 to 1757 he went into at least 250 kali battles, both against the Dutch as well as againt rival forces within Java.

He prevailed even in most critical battles when he was surrounded by larger number of troops. He defeated the Dutch captain too.

Since nobody could subdue him, the Dutch asked two other Javanese rulers: Pakubuwono III and Hamengkubuwono I to bring Raden Mas Said to the negotiation table, to which he agreed.

Hence the Salatiga Treaty was agreed on 17 March 1957. He was treated with courtesy by Pakubuwono III as well as the representative of Hamengkubuwono I.

The Salatiga Treaty ended the conflict of the Mataram rulers.

Raden Mas Said obtained an area and established the Mangkunegaran territory and co-existed alongside the rulers of Surakarta and Yogyakarta.

Raden Mas Said, locally known as Pangeran Sambernyawa, for his fierce fights in the battles, gave himself the title Mangkunegara I.

He lived on until the age 70 and passed away on 23 December 1795.

The government of Indonesia awarded him the national hero status and honored him with Bintang Mahaputra in 1983.

Although we now live in a peaceful era, we could still remember the spirit of determination of historic, heroic personalities such as Pangeran Sambernyawa / Soul Reaping Prince.

From him we learned to be brave in the face of life’s challenges, adversities and risks we face in our professions and stay righteous all the way.

The same principles could be applied in the property business as well.

We could learn to be courageous and be willing to stand for what is right and uphold principles of truth and fairness in our journey to accomplish our goals. That’s what we can do in the modern era contexts.
