Lessons in Building a Network

Lessons in Building a Network

So this week I passed 30,000 followers on Linked In so it seemed an apt moment not to just thank everyone for being in my network of Property Professionals here in the UK, but to reflect on building a Network

Linked In was launched circa 2003/4 - I joined in 2007/2008 when I launched my own company - SurreyLets. I recall it slowly staking over other forums for business networking like Ecademy.

I have found that our wisdom grows stronger when we share. Linked In is a special place for this allowing us to use our experiences to guide and inspire others, amplifying our influence through generosity and connection.

So I thought I would share some nuggets of key things I have learnt through my career in the Property Industry building a successful network here on Linked In.

Learn to say no

Prioritise meaningful connections by turning down distractions. Saying no creates room for relationships that align with your goals and values. Fill your network with people you want to connect with - and clear our occasionally!

…But say yes to new connections

Embracing new relationships fosters collaboration, growth, and unexpected opportunities for your network.

Develop your relationship-building skills

Empathy, communication, and active listening are essential to creating genuine connections. Cultivate these skills to leave a lasting impression.

Protect your time

Time spent wisely strengthens relationships. Set boundaries and focus on interactions that truly matter.

Become more self-aware

Understand your strengths and how you impact others. Self-awareness makes your connections more meaningful and authentic.

Be curious

Curiosity about others sparks engaging conversations and uncovers shared interests. It’s the foundation of building lasting relationships.

Practice empathy

Understanding and sharing others’ feelings builds trust and rapport. Empathy deepens your network's strength and reliability.

Change your perspective

Seeing situations through another’s lens can reveal new ways to connect and collaborate. Flexibility enriches your relationships.

Move past fear

Fear of rejection holds you back. Reaching out courageously opens doors to valuable connections and opportunities.

It’s not about you

Shift your focus to helping others succeed. When you invest in others, you build trust and lasting bonds.

Focus on attention and trust

Earn trust through authenticity, respect, and follow-through. Strong networks are built on genuine care and reliability.

Become an excellent listener

Active listening makes others feel valued. It builds respect and uncovers opportunities to deepen your relationships.

Take action—now

Small, consistent steps—like following up after a meeting—lead to significant progress in building your network.

Don’t be so hard on yourself

Networking is a journey. Treat yourself with patience and positivity as you build and nurture connections.

Sell your vision, not just your past

Share your future aspirations. People are drawn to those who have clear goals and enthusiasm for what lies ahead.

Embrace progress over perfection

Networking isn’t about flawless interactions. It’s about showing up, learning, and growing with each new connection.

Focus on upping your “know, like, trust” factor

This is my favourite - Authenticity and reliability make people want to work with you. Be yourself, show respect, and follow through.

Learn the difference between busy and productive

Networking isn’t about collecting contacts. Focus on building genuine relationships that have mutual value.

Shift your perspective

Every encounter is an opportunity to connect. A positive outlook turns even casual conversations into valuable relationships.

Let vulnerability be your superpower

Being open about your challenges fosters trust and relatability. Vulnerability strengthens connections and inspires loyalty.

You are something special to a select few

Your unique skills and insights resonate with the right people. Embrace your niche to attract meaningful connections.

Invest in relationships

Success stems from meaningful connections. Spend time nurturing trust and understanding with your network.

Words have power

Speak with intention and kindness. Your words can inspire, build, or break relationships—choose them carefully.

Offer help before asking for it

Share your expertise and lend support without expecting anything in return. Generosity fosters goodwill and reciprocity.

Serve, don’t sell

Approach networking as an opportunity to serve others. Adding value builds trust and creates stronger connections.

Trust your instincts

Your gut often knows what’s right. When building your network, trust your intuition to guide meaningful relationships.

Surround yourself with encouragers

Seek out people who believe in you and amplify your confidence. Their support can be transformative.

If you’re not changing it, you’re choosing it

Be intentional with your network. Focus on fostering connections that align with your goals and values.

Nurture your inner energy

Fulfillment and happiness make you magnetic. Pursue what energizes you to bring your best self to your network.

Confidence inspires confidence

Believe in yourself, and others will too. Self-assurance creates trust and opens doors to collaboration.

Most of all enjoy these relationships and where possible continue the conversation in real life too!

Thank you for being in my network.
