Lessons for AI from the Sky

Lessons for AI from the Sky

I love air travel. Every time my plane takes off it never ceases to amaze me that we are soaring high like a bird touching the clouds. It is an engineering marvel to be in a humongous iron body flying above the cloud at thirty thousand feet.

Houses shrink down to the size of toys,?highways become meandering rivers and looming mountains become small backdrops as the horizon opens up reminding us how insignificant we are on this earth. ?

It reminds me of my passion for IoT (connected aeronautics in this case), autonomous driving (planes drive autonomously) and makes me ponder about my purpose in what I do with mentoring brilliant innovators with AI.

But all this fades in front of human imagination and our will to make technology work for us to solve real problems - shrinking distances and bringing us together across cultures, languages and countries.?

As I am immersed in the world of AI and Agent AI I cannot help but ponder how the human technology interface has been built for planes and this is automation done right without taking away our humanity.?

Lessons for the the world of AI

What are the lessons in here for us as we continue this excitement of AI and Agent AI?

  1. It is not about technology for people. People fly thinking about reaching places. They are not thinking about what technology powers this plane.?

2. The technology should be safe and robust. The technology of the plane has to be about safety. Only then can we sleep through a turbulence and dream about writing blog posts.

3. It takes diverse teams and partnerships to build the right solution.?The plane we fly is built by an airplane maker (hardware). We buy tickets from airline companies who operate the planes and provide us with prizes and convenience (service). Pilots are trained in flying school and are hired to fly safely. The airline staff are tireless heroes. There are thousands of supply chain companies and technologies to help the plane's safety (aeronautics). All this is spread across multiple industries globally.

It is the same with AI. But are we there yet? I am hopeful we can get there with AI.

Data scientists, business and data owners, product managers, UX designers, machine learning engineers, analytics, AI CoEs, responsible AI departments, ethicists, lawyers … So many come together to build AI and more come together to automate using agents.?What is your role in building a human-centric, ethical AI and automation if any with Agents?

Some questions to ponder:

  1. What is your role as UX Designers as human-computer interface changes with LLMs reasoning to make decisions?
  2. What is your role as business owners in defining use cases for AI pilots to be built out?
  3. What is your role as a product manager when traditional AI switches from feature engineering to GenAI with its agents and multi-agents?
  4. Who decides on what to not automate?
  5. What are the metrics of success?
  6. What are the ethical and business risk questions to check for false positives and false negatives in a stochastic AI making decisions?
  7. What is the fail safe plan when agents fail humans??

The Agent AI foundation course that I wrote about in my last post is open for registration for a short period as I am looking for a small cohort of 20 learners.?

Comment below if you are facing these questions, or other challenges in your AI solution in your company.?Feel free to share your cloud pictures, I love them equally.

Together we’ll find answers, that is the fun of our working together on AI and my classes.
