A lesson Marlon taught me

One thing I learned from watching Marlon Brando act is that he was a master in breaking out the sense of beginning.
Robert Duvall once said: "Brando was talking with somebody and having coffee, they called him to do a scene, they said “action!”, he did the scene, they said “cut!” and he came back to the table and he was all the same. He eliminated that sense of beginning… so it was all one thing."
We – as creatives – should learn from that. Ideas should happen as we go, executions should unfold as we live, no stage should be allowed, no artifact, no acting. In every field, it is always "the most natural" that wins.
Brando broke out that sense of beginning by turning acting into a natural expression. There was no beginning and no end. There was an expression, a continuous flow.
When I think of the best pieces of advertising, I can’t find a beginning and an end. I can only see a form of expression so embedded in life that it becomes life itself.
Great creative work should be about eradicating that sense of beginning and make the advertising break feel like one with the life we live.

9 年I like the idea that it is always "the most natural" that wins. And that works beyond developing the best creative. The most natural also works for developing the best business plan, the best marketing strategy, the best media selection.

9 年Good piece. All too often clients and agencies want a blueprint of the finished thought. They view the presentation as a contract. A promise to stay with in the lines. This eliminates better ideas along the path to completion. I think its born from fear and a lack of trust.
