A Lesson from My Day in Court
In my early twenties, I had to appear in court for a civil case. And no, this wasn’t for a traffic ticket.
I was there to ask for over $12,000 that I loaned to someone. (Terrible idea, I know).
Driving to the courthouse, I was anxious, to say the least.?
I had no idea what the judge would ask.?
I arrived an hour early, waiting, my mind racing. I was angry with myself for being in this situation.?
When the judge finally called my name, my heart felt like it had sped up 10x.?
I got up from the bench and briefly scanned the room, hoping I didn’t see anyone I knew. Not only was this embarrassing but not quite something I ever imagined having to do.
The judge asked me one question:
“Ms. Hosten, how have you attempted to collect the money you’re asking for?”
I honestly don’t remember what I said back. But I remember how I felt in that moment…
I felt empowered. Confident. Certain.?
Not that I would get the money owed to me.
But confident in my ability to express myself and communicate clearly with someone in that position of authority.
Have you ever had to speak up in front of someone in authority? Policeman, lawyer, church leader, senior leadership, CEO?
If your heart starts racing, and your palms and underarms get sweaty, don’t worry—that's completely normal.
What is not normal, is when we avoid doing these things because of the discomfort they bring.?
Sometimes we avoid things —not because we’re incapable, but because we doubt our own competence.
When we avoid growth, we miss out on the chance to build our tolerance for risk and?conflict—skills that ultimately enhance how we show up at work, at home, and for ourselves.
Make it a goal to grow that skill that you’ve been running from.?
P.S. I help everyday leaders build their public speaking skills to boost their influence and impact in their organizations. Our #vocalvalue strengthens connections with others, boosts morale, and enhances teamwork—all while growing our confidence to communicate effectively in every area of our lives.

1 周People ask me all the time how I became a 5 figure a talk speaker. The most common question is did I take a class? I always say the same thing. I learned how to speak in court, convincing judges not to throw me in jail. I don't recommend it but there ain't a better way to assess the value of words. And there ain't a more pressure filled venue!
