One Lesson from the Lake We All Should Learn

I've learned many lessons from various bodies of water over the years. This is the latest one...

I took the family and some friends to Flaming Gorge, Utah for some water sports and social distancing a couple of weeks ago. On the last day of our trip we experienced air temperatures in the high 90’s down to the 60’s; unrelenting and intensely hot sun followed by thick menacing clouds then penetrating sun again; high winds and perfect calm; white caps and picture-perfect, mirror-like water.

When one is slalom skiing or wakeboarding, the calmer the water, the better. We call the best water “glass” or “butter.” Sometimes you find the butter early in the morning. Other times the water calms right at sunset. Still other times you find incredibly smooth water in the middle of a day. You never find it EVERY day and rarely do you find it ALL day long in our part of the world.

With the constancy of change in life and on the water, I learned once again that when you see that “glass,” you better get on it right now! Don’t wait! Farmers call it “making hay while the sun shines.” Some miss the best water because they can’t get out of bed in the morning. Others miss it because they go home too soon. We wasted our “butter” because we got distracted with wake surfing and an “ugly diving” competition off the bow of the boat! I thought it would stay calm all afternoon. By the time we pulled the slalom ski and ski rope back out, it was too late. The wind picked up, the water got rough, and we decided to head back to the dock and call it a day.
