Lesson 9: backhand
Most players have a weaker backhand, thus it is important in the defense play. A reliable backhand can help the player stay in the point, neutralize aggressive shots and regain control of the rally.
A strong backhand provides a strategic advantage during the match. A solid backhand forces the opponents to be more cautious in the shot selection, and thus more prone to errors.
Spacing
As with forehand, please make sure your elbow is away from your body. This gives more space for your to move and generate speed.
Bend your right arm
During preparation phase, the right arm should bent, and accelerate with your hand like throw a Frisbee.
The grip also should not be tight.
Racket forward instead of up
When hitting the ball, the racket and the body should move forward instead of moving up. This gives more power to the ball.
Left hand takes lead
On the backhand, your left hand is the lead. Left hand should pass over the right hand at the end.
Keep the ball in the racket
To have better control, you should keep the ball on your racket as long as possible.
You can use this drill below where you are imaging that you are hitting 3 balls at once. Put 3 balls on the ground, and pretending that you are hitting all 3 of them. By the third ball, your arm must have been fully extended.
Let your backhand be your weapon instead of liability!
