Lesson 14: slice v2

Lesson 14: slice v2

The slice is a versatile shot which can be used in a variety of ways.

  • Defensive play: When you are pushed out wide or are on defense, a slice can give you more time to recover and get back into position. The lower bounce and the speed of the slice can disrupt the rhythm of your opponent.
  • Approach Shots: The slice is often used when approaching the net. A low and skidding slice make it difficult for your opponent to hit an effective passing short, forcing him to hit up and set your up for an easy volley.
  • Changing the pace and spin: If your opponent is comfortable with a consistent rhythm, using a slice can mix up the pace and spin, making it harder for them to time the shots. The underspin on the slice can cause the ball to skid and stay low, throwing off the opponent who prefers hitting top spin.
  • Drop shots: A well executed slice drop shot can catch your opponent off guard, especially when they are positioned deep in the baseline.
  • Low balls: When dealing with low balls on the backhand side, a slice can be more effective to generate topspin.

A good slice needs very fine tuned techniques. First, the racket should point to the front to the direction you are hitting and it should not go to the side.

Second point is to drive it long and using your body weight to push forward.

The third point is to extend the racket completely and always in front.

The fourth point is try to bend your wrist a little and accelerate the hand when hitting the ball.

With all the tips above, let's see how much the slice is improving!
