Lesson 12: backhand power
I have talked about how to hit backhand , but I am finding myself really lacking of backhand power. My ball feels really weak and I struggled to generate pace.
I need to do a better job of the basics: turn the body, prepare high, drop the racket, left hand take over, etc.
The first is body turn, I found that I should turn a bit more than 90 degrees. Another important thing is the take back, I am not taking it back further enough. I should get my racket all the way back immediately. Both of those are reducing the backhand power.
The timing of un-coiling your body
After coiling your body, you should start un-coiling immediately then drop the racket. If you are dropping the racket before the un-coiling, you are going to lose power on your backhand.
Last step should be big
No matter how far away from your ball, the last step should be a bigger stride. It provides more stability and also help you to get how. It is also much easier to transfer the weight from the back leg to the front leg.
Handle high balls in backhand
I talked earlier about handle defense in my backhand, where I have options of slice or lob. Both options are okay but there are all very defensive. Another option is actually hitting horizontally . The gravity will take care of the ball drop and it is also likely to land deeper.
To achieve this, you should prepare high at the start. It is easier to hit horizontally on forehand. For backhand, it is very hard to hit horizontally with power. You can pulling across your body which can generate more power.
