A lot of people heard this story and chalked it up to lack of cyber security and an IT mishap, but no, this was something much different.

Something no amount of cyber security could have protected them from.

It was a normal day in the middle of a lockdown for Twitter.

When an unnamed IT employee called work from home (WFH) employees and requested them to give them their account details since they were doing some updates on Twitter’s infrastructure.

They didn’t think anything of it. It’s IT, they know what they’re doing right?

The employees had no idea what they had just done.

It wasn’t IT at all. They had fallen for a vishing attack (voice impersonation).

The hackers were in and it was time for them to exploit this mistake.

They created tweets asking people to send bitcoin to a specific wallet.

These tweets were posted from the accounts of Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Elon Musk and 160+ other high profile individuals.

They collected more than $100,000 in the first hour.

In the next few hours, The real Twitter IT caught on and removed the tweets, but the damage was already done.

They’re users had been exploited and were demanding not just apologies, but payment for their damages.

The tsunami of bad press led to their stock price dropping by 4%, costing them 1.7 BILLION in just 1 day!

This is probably worse than anything that can happen to you, but it helped me understand the #1 problem businesses face and it’s not what you think.

Hackers can use data available on People Search Sites and data brokers to impersonate employees with accurate information about their lives.

This happened completely outside of Twitter’s Cybersecurity shield, so there was nothing they could do.

We are all told that cyber security will cover your company and protect you from all sides.?

Twitter believed this too.?

It’s a lie.

A lie that started from a much darker place, but we’ll get into that later.
