Less stuff, better world

Less stuff, better world

On Monday, like many others, I celebrated Earth Day. The theme this year is Plastic Pollution.?

Simply put, there are so many opportunities to reduce the amount of single-use plastic in our homes and businesses – which can often result in cost savings too.

But what struck me this week was the difference in advertising and engagement between Black Friday, and Earth Day.

Research shows in the UK alone over the 2023?Black Friday weekend?consumers were forecast to spend £8.4 billion.?Imagine if the majority of that were repurposed to shape a better future?

And as we consider the contrasts between?Earth Day and Black Friday, as business leaders, it's time to realise the reality: that the human?reliance on plastics is threatening?our planet.

While Black Friday and its overwhelming marketing presence?is impossible to avoid,?Earth Day often struggles to be heard. How can we change that?

?? This year’s Earth Day campaign, ‘Plastics v Planet’ helps shift our gaze to the grim truth of plastic pollution - with an estimated 8 million tons entering the seas annually. Plastic pollution is not just an eyesore; it's choking marine life and putting coastal communities at risk.

As businesses, we have the power to drive change. It's time to embrace sustainability as a core principle, not just a marketing gimmick.

Firstly, let's reevaluate our consumption habits. By adopting a mindset of conscious consumption, we can reduce our ecological footprint.

Secondly, let's rethink our use of plastics - a material that has?infiltrated every aspect of our lives. But exciting alternatives exist, from biodegradable materials to innovative recycling technologies. By prioritising plastic-free solutions, we can mitigate the impact of throwaway culture.

Finally, let's use our influence to amplify the message of Earth Day. Through strategic partnerships and individual support, we can raise awareness and inspire action on a global scale.

As business leaders, let's lead the charge toward a thriving future for all.

Are you in?

Please share your Earth Day stories with us – as always, we’re keen to learn.

Best wishes,

Donna
