Lero CodePlus Programme

Lero CodePlus Programme

CodePlus, is a Computer Science (CS) outreach engagement project, the programme is funded under the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Discover Programme and will encourage, facilitate and provide opportunities to teenage female students to engage with Computer Science.

The focus of CodePlus is on addressing the gender imbalance in the field by engaging female students in CS activities in order to help them make more informed choices about studying CS courses and pursuing careers in the field. CodePlus involves a partnership between University of Limerick (UL), NUI Galway and Trinity College Dublin (TCD), to enhance the existing CodePlus project, which has been running in TCD since 2015. The initiative is supported by SFI Discover and industry partners and is a two-year project, concluding in 2023.

CodePlus includes four components:

1) Purposefully designed coding workshops (20 hours in duration) to cohorts of female students. The workshops use a collaborative project based approach to teaching & learning which has proved effective in helping learners engage with CS and more general 21st century skills.

2) Collaborating with tech companies to organise interactive webinars for students to engage with female IT professionals.

3) Working with tech companies to organise visits, for students, to company offices for tours and talks with female IT professionals (subject to COVID restrictions).

4) Systematically tracking the impact of the interventions on participants (short and long-term impact.)

The Lero NUI Galway team includes Cornelia Connolly (PI) and Sally McHugh. Lero UL teams include Clare McInerney (PI) and Brian Harkin. A number of Lero researchers have volunteered with the online coding workshops.
