Leprosy and its impact

Leprosy and its impact

Around 1000 new cases of leprosy are discovered yearly, with 10% affecting children. Sri Lanka is a crucial spot in the fight against leprosy according to the World Health Organization.

#Leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease, comes from tiny germs affecting skin, nerves, eyes, and breathing. People didn't understand it before and were unkind to those who had it.

#Leprosy Signs:

Skin Issues: Flat, light or red patches appear that can't sense much. You might not feel hot, cold, or pain there.

Nerve Problems: It hurts nerves, making muscles weak and sensation disappear. Fingers, toes, and body parts might be lost due to unnoticed injuries.

Thicker Nerves: Bigger nerves might show under your skin, often near elbows, knees, and ears.

Eyes and Breathing: It could damage eyes and even lead to blindness. Breathing problems might occur if the nose and throat are harmed.

Cure:

Doctors cure leprosy with antibiotics. The treatment duration depends on how severe your leprosy is. Early treatment helps you recover fully and reduces spreading. Leprosy isn't highly contagious, and it takes time to show after infection. Most people won't get sick even if they're near someone with leprosy.

We're not only using medicine but also raising awareness to help those with leprosy live better. If you need more information,
