Jenny: "What does Servant Leadership mean to me?"
Francisco: “'For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” - Mark 10:45 NLT
Servant Leadership, to me, is what was modeled by the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. My personal relationship with Jesus Christ has heavily influenced me in all areas of my life, and how I strive to show up in this world. In my professional workplace, local church, neighborhood, and broader community, I have always sought out opportunities to humbly serve others well. This means putting others before myself, and defining my success through the achievements of those I serve.”
Jenny: “How do you serve others as a business leader?”
Francisco: “Regardless of title or position, I believe that true leadership is built on love, service, and sacrifice. Therefore, I have always encouraged my teams (or teammates) to slow down, listen intently, be passionate, and propose outside the box solutions that will meaningfully benefit others. Most often in life, these “solutions” simply represent ways to empower others by removing obstacles that would otherwise burden or complicate their ability to achieve their goal.
For example, in a business context, I empower my teams to take calculated risks that meaningfully challenge the status quo. As a leader, I believe it is my role to anticipate, mitigate, and learn from any failed outcomes, while ensuring my team is fully recognized for their successful outcomes. In my experience, failing is a prerequisite to success— therefore, leaders must ensure that their teams remain motivated to deliver outstanding long-term outcomes, and avoid the distractions that come from short-term trial and error.”
Jenny: “How has your passion for serving others shifted over time?”
Francisco: “I’m incredibly blessed that my parents, wife, and mentors continuously encourage me to serve others first and foremost. I believe it is important to surround yourself with friends and mentors who model Servant Leadership and share their stories—the good and the bad. We have all been uniquely shaped by our life experiences, and sharing those experiences offers others important perspective.
As I gain more and more life experience, my goal is to share this knowledge with others. At the Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership, we have an incredible Executive Director, Staff, and Board of Trustees that are truly passionate about advancing the awareness, understanding, and practice of Servant Leadership by individuals and organizations around the world.?
In recent years, I've shifted my focus toward deeper community engagement and entrepreneurship. I currently own and operate a consulting portfolio that primarily serves small-to mid-size businesses. By combining my business experience with my passion for serving others well, I strive to be known as a trusted and must-have strategic partner to growth-focused businesses across North America.”
