The lengths some people will go to...

This is new to me. I saw this on Antiques Roadshow the other week and I must say I was totally blown away.

In this digital age, we point our phones or camera at the subject and it does all the hard work for us.

But, before that it was pot luck, light meters or this extraordinary device.

It's called Kaufmann's Le Posographe and is basically a device for giving you accurate light readings for your camera.

The user would move the dials to best represent the situation they are in and by an ingenious mechanical system of levers it would give an accurate reading allowing the user to set the aperture and shutter speed on their cameras.

One side of the calculator was for outdoor shoots and the flip side was for indoor photography.

But look at the detail! There's even a setting for where your subject would be in relation to the window (single or double!) along with the month and time of day and the colour of the floor. The level of detail in this device is mind-blowing!

Auguste-Robert Kaufmann patented the design in 1922 and it was a huge success and was later made in several languages.

But the fact that someone had the ingenuity to create such a wonderful device, factoring in so many variables blows my mind.

When they occasionally come up on the market they tend to sell between ￡200-￡800.

Anyway, out of the wormhole and back down to earth!
