Two buzzing cities with a lot in common
When Red Bull announced their investment into Leeds United in May 2024, the Yorkshire club became part of a global football family that includes German giants RB Leipzig. But that’s not the only connection between the fastest-growing cities in England and Germany.
An event in Leeds on 12 December 2024 will build on a host of similarities that makes these two dynamic regions great places for businesses looking to expand into new markets.
Youthful and Fastest-Growing
Leipzig is the fastest-growing city in Germany, a title which in the UK is held by Leeds. Both regions have great universities; strong population growth and have a much younger demographic than their respective national averages. All of this is great for businesses and it’s no surprise that both are renowned for startup and scaleup activity.
Creative, Digital and Media
Uber-cool Leipzig is a hotbed of creative, digital and media activity (see my previous article - https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/uber-cool-leipzig-media-creative-hotspot-adam-breeze-rsmte/). Similarly, Leeds has a dynamic digital and tech landscape and a vibrant hub of innovation from cutting-edge start-ups to established tech giants.
Healthcare and Innovation
Leipzig is a leader in applied medical research and marketable healthcare innovation. Its stated aim is to rapidly develop and introduce new therapies, devices, and solutions into the EU’s primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare systems. Likewise, West Yorkshire is home to an internationally-recognised healthcare and innovation ecosystem, with six government health headquarters and some of the world’s largest healthcare data platforms.

Advanced Manufacturing
Major manufacturing sites in Leipzig include Porsche and BMW factories, along with cutting edge tech like the world's leading manufacturer of graphene-based supercapacitors, Skeleton Technologies. While West Yorkshire has over 6,000 manufacturing and engineering businesses, many are specialists in advanced processes, R&D and product development.
