Legrand Solutions for Futureproof Datacenters
The concept of futureproofing datacenter designs arises from the rapid changes in the active equipment going into the DCs.? The high-performance computing requirements of active equipment today has resulted in DC operators quickly falling short of power and cooling at datacenters.
This invariably means that every DC design should be able to cater to the needs of today and at least 3 to 5 equipment changes over the life of the Datacenter.? The DC design should take into consideration the following:
Datacenter Equipment Life Expectancy:
- Average data center life expectancy => 10-15 years
- Defined PDU life expectancy => 8-12 years
- Average Life Expectancy of a Server => 3-5 years
- IT Equipment’s Refresh Cycle => 2-5 years
We at Legrand believe in futureproofing your DC designs and our innovations has resulted in perfecting a product range that can ensure that customers have the ability to scale up as required.
Legrand’s Modulan Racks & Containment
Modulan racking system custom built for DC operators are highly modular racks with complete autonomy on changing dimensions of the mount posts post installation. The racks are unique in their construction enabling the customer to change the width of the mount posts anywhere from 19†to 23†and the depth from 600mm to 2000mm.
?Advantages:
- Datacenter operators now gets the flexibility to meet mounting requirements on all sizes of equipment.
- High modularity in mounting of cable managers, rack accessories and PDUs.
- Cages and aisle doors can be added onto the existing cabinets by extending the profiles after installation without having to remove racks from rows.
- Meets requirements of the new 21†Open Compute Project active equipment designs.
- Cages, hot / cold aisle containments can be added to the racking system at any time as per tenant requirement without hampering existing DC operations.
- The ability to move mount posts enable the DC operator to decide the spaces for cable management or accessory mounting as per on site conditions.

Legrand USystems – ColdLogik Rear Doors
The solution involves redesigning all future datacenters with ColdLogik Rear Door cooling system from Legrand’s USystems manufactured in the UK. This unit brings to the customer an innovative ‘ADAPTIVE COOLING SYSTEM’ effectively futureproofing the cooling system within the Datacenter.
?
ColdLogik Rear Doors:
?The rear door heat exchangers are mounted onto the rear of the racks replacing the standard rear doors. The units have fans which will pull cold air from the front of the racks through the active equipment which heats up the air. This heated air from the active equipment is pulled through the active heat exchanger door connected to chilled water lines. The heat is negated at the rear door and cold air exits the rack into the datacenter.
Cooling Philosophy:
The hot air exiting the active equipment is prevented from spreading the heat into the room as it is contained within the rack. The heated air has to pass through the rear door heat exchanger to exit the rack thereby ensuring that a low volume of air needs to pass through the cooling unit to maintain low temperatures within the DC. This increases efficiency and with only 350 Watts needed to cool up to 50kW of heat, the PUE levels remain low.
Rack with vented front door:
Racks shall have a front perorated door and no rear door. The rear door shall be the rear door heat exchanger. Existing racks can be fitted with this rear door heat exchanger system by removing the rear doors from the racks and the ColdLogik cooling system is vendor neutral which means to say that these cooling units can be mounted on racks of any brand with the help of an adaptor.
General Notes:
The rear doors can also be deployed on the finished slab with support frames. Racks can be brought in and rolled into the space in front of the ColdLogik rear door heat exchangers (fixed to the floor in this case) as and when the customer decides to populate the DC.?

Design Considerations with Legrand’s USystems ColdLogik System; please note the following:
- Technical / CRAC/CRAH Rooms can be eliminated and incorporated into the DC whitespace thereby increasing the DC operators rack footprint. Number of racks can be increased by up to 75%!
- FCUs, CRAH, CRAC and hot / cold aisle containments can be eliminated. This ensures that the DC operator will have an ‘ADAPTIVE COOLING SYSTEM’ which can cater to heat loads from 8kW to 200 kW per rack (subject to customer’s specification during design).
- No false ceiling required. The DC ceiling height does not have to account for a ceiling plenum and hence reduction in construction costs.?
- Fire suppression zones will be reduced to a single zone within the entire whitespace.
- Cooling capacity of the rack can be increased up to 200KW per rack which will enable the DC cooling system to be futureproofed against new upcoming high performance computing requirements.
- Uses only 350 watts to cool 50kW per Rack. Low PUE becomes a reality while bringing down operational costs of the DC.?
- The Cold Logic system could also eliminate a raised floor as our unit can be deployed directly on the slab.

Legrand Starline Busway System:?
Futureproofing your power distribution involves the ability to change the layout of the DC, move power points around depending on future requirements.? With the Starline track busway system rated up to 1250 amps, the DC operator has the ultimate flexibility to remove, move and install new tap off boxes as required.
??
- Starline busways and tap-off boxes enable remote monitoring to help with power data analysis.
- Tap off boxes can be inserted into the track busway system without downtime enabling flexibility to the power distribution system.
- Snap in fixing system enables quick installation and quick layout changes in future.
Legrand UPS:
Legrand proposes modular three phase UPS units as modular UPS units enable easy upgrades on power capacities.? Future proofing your DC requires UPS to have the ability to scale up to future needs of the DC.
?
- Efficiency rating of 96.5 with a power factor of 1 makes Legrand modular UPS an ideal solution.
- Modules can be added to existing UPS to increase power and back up time to ensure maximum redundancy.
- Decentralized bypass system to ensure that in case of one module failure, the remaining modules move into bypass mode.? Each module will have an independent bypass.
- Rotating touch screen display to help configure the UPS with the doors open.

Legrand’s Raritan PX4 Power Distribution Units:
Raritan’s PX4 units are built for the future and is today the most apt solution for enterprise Datacenters.? PDUs are a crucial mission critical component within the datacenter space. Futureproofing your DC requires the use of PDU outlets which can take in C14 and C20 power cords as a basic physical transformation.?
In addition, the ability to monitor multiple parameters ensures quality, reliability and prevent events that could result in downtime.?
Design considerations when choosing a PDU:
- Remote power management is required to proactively troubleshoot sources of power issues and optimize for PUE and CUE.
- Measure total harmonic distortion to measure how much your electrical load distorts your facility's power.
- Measure reactive power, phase angle, displacement power factor, apparent energy, and inrush current measurements to enable the DC operator to address capacity planning, environmental optimization, failover planning and action with troubleshooting initiatives.
- All controllers shall be hot swappable on the PDUs to ensure easy maintenance in case of controller failure.
- The PDU should have not more than 0.5% metering accuracy to critical power quality and energy efficiency.
- Circuit Breaker Trip Forensics with Waveform Capture to enable the user to identify exactly which outlet led to the circuit breaker tripping and analyze the root cause of the problem.
- Every port on the PDU should have a locking function to ensure that all power cords are secured into the PDU to prevent accidental loss of power.
