LEGO's Bold Move Prioritizing Women's Health in ESG Initiatives

During a recent coaching session with my colleague, Tanja ?ebez , mention of LEGO's sustainability highlights drew my attention. I was surprised by LEGO's unique approach to sustainability, particularly their new initiative focused on menopause awareness. I found it remarkable that a company would address such a personal and often overlooked issue within the realm of corporate sustainability.

LEGO's 2023 Sustainability Highlights report showcases their impressive progress across various fronts, from record participation in the "Build the Change" program to increased use of sustainable packaging materials. However, what truly sets them apart is their pioneering initiative to raise awareness about menopause.

This initiative is not just a nod to inclusivity but a bold move that deserves recognition. It addresses a topic that is typically shrouded in silence, yet profoundly impacts many women in the workforce. By openly tackling menopause, LEGO is breaking new ground in corporate social responsibility.

A fascinating study by Dr. Lisa Mosconi, a leading neuroscientist and women's brain health specialist, sheds light on the critical role of sex hormones in women's cognitive function. Featured on "The Diary Of A CEO" podcast Menopause is Shrinking you Brain! , Dr. Mosconi's research suggests that brain function can decline by up to 30% during menopause due to the drop in estrogen levels. This decline is also linked to an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease later in life.

During this phase, many women around the world struggle to perform their best at work, often facing misunderstandings and a lack of support. The challenges they experience are not just physical but also cognitive and emotional, sometimes leaving them unable to fully comprehend or articulate their own difficulties. This lack of understanding can lead to decreased productivity and increased stress, making it crucial for workplaces to provide the necessary support and accommodations.

LEGO's decision to prioritize women's health through their menopause awareness program aligns seamlessly with the growing importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors. This initiative has several significant implications:

Environmental (E): While this particular initiative is more focused on the 'S' and 'G' aspects of ESG, it’s essential to acknowledge that LEGO’s broader sustainability efforts include substantial environmental initiatives. Their commitment to sustainable packaging materials and eco-friendly production processes highlights their dedication to minimizing environmental impact.

Social Impact and Employee Wellbeing (S): Menopause can significantly affect a woman's physical and mental health, potentially leading to absenteeism and decreased productivity. By providing education and support, LEGO demonstrates a profound commitment to employee wellbeing—a key social responsibility metric within ESG. This initiative helps foster a supportive and inclusive work environment, ensuring female employees feel understood and valued. It also aligns with LEGO's goal of increasing female representation at Director+ levels, currently standing at 41.5%.

Governance and Risk Management (G): Ignoring employee health concerns can lead to decreased morale, higher turnover, and potential legal issues. LEGO's proactive approach exemplifies responsible governance by mitigating these risks. Additionally, this initiative bolsters LEGO's positive public image, showcasing their dedication to social responsibility and gender equality. This, in turn, can attract and retain top talent while enhancing their reputation.

A Unique Approach to ESG

While promoting physical and mental health is common in ESG strategies, LEGO's focus on a specific women's health issue like menopause is relatively rare. This bold move positions LEGO as a leader in progressive workplace practices and highlights the evolving nature of corporate social responsibility.

LEGO's menopause awareness program exemplifies how addressing social issues such as women's health can significantly enhance a company's ESG performance. By prioritizing employee wellbeing, fostering inclusivity, and demonstrating responsible governance, LEGO is setting a new standard for corporate sustainability.

Their initiative not only supports their employees but also sends a powerful message about the importance of addressing women's health in the workplace. This innovative approach positions LEGO as a leader in creating a more inclusive and supportive work environment, reinforcing their commitment to sustainable excellence.

I encourage businesses to take inspiration from LEGO and explore how they can incorporate ESG principles into their operations. By addressing critical social issues, companies can not only improve their ESG performance but also create a more supportive and inclusive workplace.

Let's work together to foster a sustainable future where every employee's wellbeing is prioritized and valued. We can help you design, develop and implement your unique tailored ESMS.
