Early Life and Racing Career

Born on January 11, 1923, in Leesburg, Texas, Carroll Hall Shelby grew up with a passion for cars and racing. His fascination with automobiles began at a young age when he learned to drive at the tender age of 14. At 16, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, serving as a flight instructor and test pilot.

After the war, Shelby pursued his dream of becoming a professional racing driver. He started racing in 1952, and by 1956, he had won his first national championship. However, a heart condition cut his racing career short, leading to his retirement from professional racing in 1959.

However, he had accomplished quite a lot in these few years. After winning multiple races in America, Shelby headed to the hot and happening European motorsport scene. He drove at legendary races like Aintree, Monza, Le Mans. Back in America, he took multiple national speed records, driving at the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Sports Illustrated Magazine named him Driver Of The Year in 1956 and in 1957. The highlight of his racing career came in 1959 when he drove an Aston Martin DBR1 to victory at Le Mans. Shelby suffered from a heart valve leakage from the age of seven and that brought an end to his driving career.
