Legendary Black Classic CHRISTMAS TV MEMORIES Explored in New Book
Countless classic Christmas TV specials are explored in Herbie J Pilato’s new book, CHRISTMAS TV MEMORIES: NOSTALGIC HOLIDAY FAVORITES OF THE SMALL SCREEN.
Several ground-breaking African-American stars and shows, in particular, are discussed in the book including Nat King Cole’s legendary variety show, dancer Arthur Duncan from The Lawrence Welk Show), and groundbreaking sitcoms such as Diahann Carroll’s Julia, The Jeffersons, Good Times, Everybody Hates Chris, and more.
Overall, CHRISTMAS TV MEMORIES is divided into four parts: holiday variety specials, animated classics, TV-movies, and weekly episodic shows.

The animated fare discussed in the book includes A Charlie Brown Christmas, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town, and Frosty the Snowman; famed holiday variety specials such as those hosted by Mitzi Gaynor, Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Andy Williams, Donny and Marie, and the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special.
The TV-movies profiled in the book include (among others) The Waltons: Homecoming and The Gathering, starring Ed Asner, while the weekly holiday-themed episodes discussed are from The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Six Million Dollar Man, and Bewitched, and more.
For one, the iconic Bewitched episode, “Sisters at Heart,†about Tabitha befriending a young African-American girl amid racial injustice, won the Govenor’s Award at the Emmys.
