LEGAL NEEDS OF INVESTIGATORS GO BEYOND THE JOB AT HAND

LEGAL NEEDS OF INVESTIGATORS GO BEYOND THE JOB AT HAND

Nick McAleenan, partner at leading independent law firm Brabners, discusses how ABI members can benefit from a new partnership giving them access to a full suite of legal services.

Members of the Association for British Investigators (ABI) pride themselves on offering the highest professional standards in the sector, and conducting their business to the letter of the law.

But bringing to light dishonest, fraudulent, or perhaps even malicious activities – be it personal or professional – has the potential to create conflict if a person of interest becomes aware that they’re being investigated. Even investigators holding themselves to the highest standards are not immune to the risk of attracting legal claims. It is, unfortunately, a reality of the job.

For example, a person or business of interest could attempt to stymie any investigation by claiming an invasion of privacy or trespassing on private property as part of surveillance operations, against an investigator. Equally, they might refer to data protection law or breaches of confidential information.

It’s prudent for investigators to have the help of legal professionals, adept in privacy and data protection related issues, to help protect themselves from any such complaints.

That’s why Brabners, a leading independent law firm, has entered into an exciting partnership with the ABI to provide support to its members. The partnership includes access to full-service support on the above issues, as well as many other day-to-day legal requirements, ranging from drafting and negotiating commercial contracts, to employee agreements and property leases. Brabners is a full service law firm and has legal experts specialising in all areas.

The new service includes a helpline for members, which allows access to 30 minutes of free advice, with any additional work agreed and accessed on a discounted cost basis.

Whether it’s a legal query related to an investigation, or the wider issues of running a business, our team is on hand to help.

We have more than 460 colleagues working across our Liverpool, Manchester, Lancashire and Leeds offices. And last year, we were recognised as the largest UK law firm to achieve B-Corp status – a reflection of our purpose-driven approach, and how we operate as a force for good.
