The global action on climate change is decided as part of other UN negotiations, according to the IUCN we are facing a global extinction crisis where researchers published?earlier this year a list of the most threatened species groups in the world leading to a rapid population decline of these creatures. The ongoing discussions to pass the UN High Seas Treaty which went on for two weeks in New York had led to unconsiderable results where essentially governments could not agree on the terms.
Environmental campaigners have been trying to alert individuals and organizations about the importance of protecting international waters as nearly two-thirds of the world's oceans but only 1.2% is protected, however, their feedback of this meeting was that it was a missed opportunity since marina life outside of this 1.2% figure is areas at risk of exploitation from the increasing threats of climate change, overfishing, and shipping traffic.?
This is placing a limit on our biodiversity, affecting coastal communities, and deep-sea mining as certain minerals?that are being taken from the seabed which is exposing electronics that are buried on the sea floor, which in the process of exposing these could also be toxic for marine life. As a whole, countries have failed to reach an agreement on key issues of fishing rights and funding for it, especially for developing countries. Unfortunately, concerns have emerged that without this treaty marine species are under incredible threat of not being protected but that also there is so much water species to be discovered but will extinction reach them first, we will have to observe the developments of these discussions.?

Those avid readers amongst you may recall our previous story concerning the threat of increasing strikes from the country’s barristers.
Well, that threat has now become a reality as criminal barristers across both England and Wales have announced an indefinite strike?from 5th September 2022.
Following their previous consecutive week strikes, the Criminal Bar Association has taken the decision to increase the levels of which their members strike. Their demands are quite clear: a 25% increase in pay where legal aid work is concerned.?
Whist some view the governments previous offer of a 15% increase to be fair, others protest this, highlighting that this wouldn’t be instantaneous and thus not apply to those cases already active.?
Whilst the barristers may be fighting for justice in this sense, it is leaving many deprived of it, with these further strikes ser to cause delays for thousands of the accused and victims alike within the criminal justice system.

In a move worth a staggering £600m, ASDA has agreed to buy all of the Co-Op’s 129-strong network of fuel stations.
The deal includes £438m of upfront payment, and Asda’s acquisition of around £162m in lease liabilities, and will be finalised later this year, when exact figures will also be published.
This sale represents a significant opportunity for the Co-Op, who have said this sale of 5% of their retail estate will help them to both expand their network of grocery stores, and to balance the books - which for all retailers is absolutely crucial as they move out of the last couple of years of pandemic and restrictions. Their Chief executive, Shirine Khoury-Haq said of the move, “This transaction is in line with our strategy to move away from operating petrol forecourts and supports our vision of co-operating for a fairer world, while building our core leading convenience business.”
Asda, on the other hand, have said that this deal gives them the “opportunity to bring Asda value in fuel and groceries to even more customers and communities across the UK.”
This deal seems to fit in with the aims of both businesses, and may help Asda with their aim to become the UK’s second largest supermarket chain for the long-term. It is quite likely that both businesses could now flourish in line with their own individual aims as a result of this acquisition.
