A legal storm has erupted in the Madras High Court as acclaimed actor Dhanush filed a civil petition against actress Nayanthara and her husband, director Vignesh Shivan, over alleged copyright infringement. The controversy centres around a three-second behind-the-scenes video from the sets of the 2015 film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan featured in the Netflix documentary Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairytale.
Allegations and Response
Dhanush’s lawsuit claims that the video clip, part of a pivotal moment in the documentary, was used without obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC). He alleges the footage belongs to the film's production and accuses Nayanthara and Vignesh of unauthorized use. The petition also names Los Gatos Production Services India LLP, Netflix's content partner in India, as a co-defendant.
In response, Nayanthara’s attorney, Rahul Dhawan, denied any copyright violation. Speaking to Hindustan Times, Dhawan asserted, "There is no infringement or violation because what we have used in the docu-series is not part of the film's behind-the-scenes material. It belongs to Nayanthara and Vignesh's library." He emphasized that the disputed video does not breach copyright laws as it was privately recorded and not part of the movie’s official content.
Background of the Dispute
The legal spat reportedly began when Nayanthara sought permission to include footage from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan—a film significant in her journey, as the set was where she met Vignesh. Upon being denied, the documentary still featured the contentious three-second clip. This prompted Dhanush’s legal team to issue a notice demanding its removal and warning of potential legal action, including damages of ten crore rupees.
Tense Atmosphere
Amidst the escalating legal battle, reports suggest strained relations between the two stars. At a recent industry function, Dhanush and Nayanthara reportedly avoided each other, maintaining distance and avoiding eye contact.
What’s Next?
The case now awaits further proceedings in the Madras High Court. It has significant implications for how personal and professional boundaries are navigated in the entertainment industry. This high-profile dispute underscores the complex interplay between personal relationships and legal rights within the Indian film industry.
