Legal Aid of North Carolina: The Law Firm for the People

In North Carolina, justice is a privilege too many cannot afford. Every day, families face crises that threaten their homes, safety, and livelihoods. Domestic violence survivors seek protection. Seniors fall prey to scams. Veterans battle for the benefits they earned. Human trafficking survivors fight to reclaim their lives. And when disaster strikes, entire communities struggle to rebuild.

But when the average attorney in North Carolina costs $295 an hour, where can those in need turn? For the families we serve, who earn an average of just $22,800 a year—less than $2,000 a month to cover rent, food, childcare, and healthcare—hiring an attorney is impossible. A person making $11 an hour would need to work 27 hours just to afford one hour of legal representation. When facing an unlawful eviction, an abusive partner, or the denial of life-sustaining benefits, justice shouldn’t come with a price tag most cannot pay.

This is why Legal Aid of North Carolina exists. We are not your typical law firm—we are the law firm for the people of North Carolina. As the largest nonprofit law firm in the state, we provide free legal services to those who need them most. Our work ensures that justice isn’t reserved for those who can afford it, but is accessible to everyone, regardless of income.

The need for legal services is staggering. In 2023, 75% of Americans faced a civil legal problem, yet 92% of low-income Americans navigated these issues alone. More than half of Americans doubt they can afford a lawyer at all. The result? Families lose their homes. Domestic violence survivors remain trapped in dangerous situations. Veterans go without medical care. Seniors are stripped of their life savings.

Legal Aid of North Carolina steps in where the system falls short. We fight for justice in every county, providing hope and relief to those who would otherwise have nowhere to turn. We stand with the vulnerable, ensuring that justice is not a privilege for the few, but a right for all.

When we fight for justice, we fight for a stronger, safer, and fairer North Carolina. But we cannot do it alone. Support for civil legal services is support for the very foundation of our communities—because justice should never depend on the size of your paycheck.

Legal Aid of North Carolina is here. Because justice belongs to everyone.
