In a world now focused on the urgent need to decarbonise, heat networks stand out as a practical and attainable solution for our towns and cities. As Programme Director for Triple Point Heat Networks Investment Management, the delivery partner to the UK government for its two flagship, publicly funded district heating schemes, I’ve seen firsthand how projects across the UK have seized the opportunity to transform our built environment and deliver lasting, positive change. The Heat Networks Investment Project and the Green Heat Network Fund shine a bright light on the power of collaboration and investment. While there is still so much to be done, we can already reflect on their successes and celebrate the projects that are driving us towards a more sustainable future. It has been so brilliant to get to know individual projects, supporting them in their journeys and celebrating the value creation. It’s a joy to share some of those remarkable achievements with you all in the articles below.
The Legacy of Triple Point Heat Networks Investment Management: transforming the UK’s Heating Landscape
As the Programme Director for two major heat network funding schemes over the past six years, I have had the unique privilege of witnessing firsthand how effective collaboration, sheer hard work, and innovative solutions can bring about transformational change. This edition of the Futurebuild newsletter reflects on the journey we’ve taken as a team to deliver the Heat Networks Investment Project (HNIP) and its successor, the Green Heat Network Fund (GHNF). These schemes, delivered by Triple Point Heat Networks Investment Management (TPHNIM), in partnership with the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero (DESNZ) have been instrumental in advancing the UK’s progress towards net zero. I am incredibly proud to have been part of this transformative journey.

To meet tough Net Zero targets in 2050, the UK needs to act to find alternatives to, or remove altogether, many of the carbon intensive activities upon which we currently rely, like transportation, electricity production and heating. As part of the Energy Act 2023, a significant opportunity arises for heat networks to drive up carbon neutral heating and develop an entirely new sector focused on the demands of 2050. The UK is now putting some serious thought to heat networks, and the initiatives contained in the Energy Act 2023 can be a catalyst for investment and a material way to help expand them in the UK.
North East coal mines help power the green revolution
ITV News has featured the HNIP funded Gateshead heat network in a story looking at untapped heat sources that can be used to provide low carbon heating and hot water to homes and businesses. The Gateshead heat network is one of many mines across the UK being used as a geothermal energy source, utilising trapped water within abandoned coal mines naturally heated by the Earth. The technology is an example of new green energy projects providing energy, jobs and regeneration back to the North East of England.?
