A Legacy of Service

A Legacy of Service

In a few days, we will recognize the great Martin Luther King, Jr. who dedicated his life to achieving his vision for a diverse America – one with universal equality, where we all work together, build each other up, and support each other regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, socio-economic background, gender, or other defining characteristic. One of his greatest legacies?relates to his focus on service. MLK Jr. Day provides an important reminder to take a pause and reflect on the incredible impact we make every day in the service of others.?

He believed we all have power within to make a difference in the world around us, no matter how small. Dr. King famously said, “If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.”

I know that as a team member, working at Sunrise is more than just a career.?It is a role that helps us achieve a greater purpose in life: serving others.?You have chosen a mission-driven organization that is fundamentally about people caring for people, and you all take tremendous pride in not just doing your job but in serving others with the highest standards of quality. A day does not go by when I do not see or hear first-hand the positive impact of your serving heart. It is what helps build and maintain trust with tens of thousands of residents and families across North America.?It is what encourages others to join our team to fulfill their calling. And make no doubt about it, it is what will allow us to continue to grow and deliver on Sunrise’s mission for decades to come.

As we continue to battle and emerge from this enduring pandemic, I firmly believe that now, more than ever, society at large needs Sunrise. Through our daily actions, we will continue to embrace diversity, celebrate individuality, and show respect for all.?Said simply, we exist to champion quality of life for all seniors and with every heartfelt connection, hug, smile, and laugh you initiate at Sunrise, you are doing your part to realize Dr. King’s vision of a “beloved community.”

As you make plans to celebrate the life lessons and lasting legacy of Dr. King in your own unique way, please accept my heartfelt gratitude for the service leadership and heart you bring to your role at Sunrise. You are what makes Sunrise a great place to work and live. You are what will help us continue to shine bright and realize our vision to make Sunrise a home for all.

I am truly humbled and honored to lead this awe-inspiring team.

At the MLK memorial at the Washington Tidal Basin…there are 14 quotes from Dr. King on the Wall of Hope. One of them is “Make a career of humanity. Commit yourself to the noble struggle for equal rights. You will make a better person of yourself, a greater nation of your country, and a finer world to live in." March for Integrated Schools, April 18, 1959. That quote is included in the King presentation that HRG has been giving the last few days and of course next week.
