A Legacy of Craftsmanship: Isaac Alexander's Journey with Dovetail Custom Wood & Metal

I had the chance to connect with Isaac Alexander, President and CEO of Dovetail Custom Wood & Metal and member of the Architectural Woodwork Institute (AWI).

Isaac Alexander, President and CEO of Dovetail Custom Wood & Metal, grew up on a farm near Austin, Texas, where his love for craftsmanship began at age five. From modest beginnings, Isaac founded Dovetail, which has since evolved into a leading company specializing in wood, metal, and stone design, fabrication, and installation. With a track record of successfully completing arenas, stadiums, towers, high-end law firms, and offices, Isaac's leadership has propelled Dovetail to the forefront of the industry through innovation and forward-thinking.? A dedicated member of the Architectural Woodwork Institute (AWI), Isaac continues to uphold the highest standards of excellence in every endeavor.

Q: Tell me about your business and what separates you from your competition?

A: Dovetail is one of the largest manufacturers of millwork, metalwork, and stone in Texas. What truly sets us apart from our competitors is our commitment to handling all aspects of millwork, metalwork, and stone fabrication internally, without outsourcing any part of the process. Unlike others in the industry who outsource certain elements of their manufacturing process, we have invested in the infrastructure and expertise to handle everything under one roof.

Q: How do you build culture, relationships, and teams inside and outside of your organization?

As leaders, we consistently model the behaviors and principles that reflect our desired culture, understanding that our actions set the tone for the entire organization.?

A: To cultivate a strong company culture, we prioritize hiring individuals who align with our values and exhibit the right attitude. As leaders, we consistently model the behaviors and principles that reflect our desired culture, understanding that our actions set the tone for the entire organization. Whether interacting internally or externally, professionalism is non-negotiable—we always strive to maintain a high standard of conduct and presentation. This includes dressing in company attire and ensuring our virtual meetings are conducted with our cameras on, reflecting our commitment to professionalism and excellence in every interaction.

Q: Who or what has influenced your leadership ethos?

A: The development of my leadership ethos has been primarily influenced by individuals within the organization whom I've worked with over the years. Observing their leadership styles and the impactful actions they've taken has shaped the way I lead. I've learned valuable lessons from watching others excel in their roles, and I often find myself subconsciously emulating their approaches. I've found that learning from the successes of others and incorporating their effective strategies into my own leadership style has been invaluable in my growth as a leader.

Q: What are you expecting out of 2024 and how will that impact your business?

A: We are anticipating an upsurge in activity from the middle to the end of the year; we are preparing for a significant increase in workload. We are excited about the arrival of a range of new equipment, including advanced robotics and automation technology, which will revolutionize our operations. With these additions, we are poised to nearly double our production capacity, enabling us to meet heightened demand and deliver exceptional results to our customers. This influx of innovative machinery underscores our commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements in our industry and maintaining efficiency, quality, and competitiveness in all aspects of our business.

Q: Your story with Dovetail is incredibly unique; tell us more about how it all started.

Dovetail is not just a business; it's a testament to my journey and a commitment to excellence that transcends individuality.

A: My woodworking journey began at the age of five, crafting wooden spoons and toys. Over time, I refined my skills and started selling my creations at farmers' markets. Growing up on a farm among eight siblings instilled a strong sense of perseverance and entrepreneurship in me. At 17, I achieved a significant milestone by getting my spoons into Whole Foods. This success fueled my ambition, leading me to establish my own shop at 20, specializing in building bars, restaurants, and cabinetry for homes. However, at 27, I felt a deep desire to create something larger than myself, which inspired the founding of Dovetail. Named after the enduring woodworking joint, Dovetail represents craftsmanship and durability. To this day, all our cabinet drawer boxes feature Dovetail joinery, ensuring exceptional strength and longevity. Dovetail is not just a business; it's a testament to my journey and a commitment to excellence that transcends individuality.

Q: How does your current space support your company’s goals and your hiring initiatives?

A: As our current space nears its capacity, we're preparing to embark on an expansion journey to a significantly larger facility that offers ample room for growth. Currently occupying a hundred thousand square feet, our vision involves expanding to one hundred fifty thousand square feet in the near future, with a long-term vision of reaching three hundred thousand square feet. Our hiring initiatives will closely align with the expansion of our workspace, ensuring that our team grows in tandem with our increased capacity. This strategic approach will enable us to accommodate our growing operations effectively and position ourselves for continued success in the years to come.

Q: What do you work for and what do you do for fun??

Creating happiness is something I deeply value, whether it's through satisfying our customers or fostering a positive work environment for our team.

A: I find great fulfillment in working alongside my colleagues and facing the daily challenges that come with my role. The opportunity to collaborate with such talented individuals is truly an honor, and I derive immense joy from it. I genuinely look forward to Mondays because of the wonderful people I work with, the engaging projects we undertake, and the relationships we build with our customers. Creating happiness is something I deeply value, whether it's through satisfying our customers or fostering a positive work environment for our team. Outside of work, I enjoy staying active by going to the gym, spending time with my son and family, and going to church.

Q: What would you attribute to your company's growth over the last few years??

A: Our growth has been consistent for the past ten years and shows no signs of slowing down. We've become accustomed to this upward trend, as satisfied customers continually bring us more work. Looking ahead, we anticipate this continual growth will continue into the future.

Q: How have you improved the architectural fabrication since founding Dovetail in 2014?

A: We have made significant improvements in architectural fabrication, both within our facility and across the industry. We have actively engaged with industry organizations to provide feedback on project management techniques and customer communication strategies, contributing to overall industry advancement. Additionally, our decision to handle woodwork, metalwork, and stonework entirely in-house has been regarded as revolutionary within our field. This integrated approach allows for greater control over quality and timelines. Additionally, we have successfully integrated remote work options for some employees, enabling more employees to work from home and enhancing flexibility without sacrificing productivity. These improvements reflect our commitment to innovation and continuous enhancement in architectural fabrication.
