Left hand, right brain
Are you left handed? Please prepare yourself for a short experiment by getting a pen, a coin, a toilet roll and a phone. Here goes.
- Pick up the pen to write your name.
- Put the coin on the floor, now step on it.
- Pretend the toilet roll is a telescope.
- Pick up the phone to listen to it.
Now did you use your right or left hand, foot, eye or ear? This gives you a rating on how left handed you are. If it was your left hand, foot, eye and ear, you are a real Leftie.
Left handers have a more developed right “holistic thinking” brain. The right hemisphere is associated with creativity, emotion and intuition. Left hand/right brain people are characterised as artistic, innovative and often random with thought processes are sometimes viewed as irregular and roundabout. Occupations associated with left hand/right-brained people, including politics (!), acting and athletics.
Whilst today we are celebrating the left hand/right brain people, the attributes of the right hand/left brain people are valuable to society too. Most importantly in an ageing society is that we undertake the physical and mental exercises that are critical to ensure that our brains remain fit. So today is a good day to memorise a list, translate your text into a foreign language or work out the cost of your shopping in your head. Stay brain fit!
