Leeds Needs Seeds

There's an amazing technology for sucking up the excess carbon in our atmosphere. It also helps with well-being and mental health.

 It's called a Tree.

Local Participation - Individuals, Businesses, Community Groups

Leeds Woodland Creation is a local project to plant 5.8 million trees, doubling the current number in the region. Growing this number of trees will only happen if there are enough the seeds available to plant, germinate and nurture. What better sourcing these than collecting the local windfall?

By encouraging public involvement in the Leeds Needs Seeds collection, the initiative also aims to engage as many people as possible with the benefits, including the beauty of increasing local woodlands.  Anyone can get involved and it's completely free. The project is part of the Leeds Climate Change commitment to achieve a carbon neutral municipality by 2030.

Get yourself and your family or work colleagues outside collecting. The plan is to collect seeds, nurture them and plant millions of saplings throughout the region. What's not to like?

Carbon Capture and Other Good things about Trees

A fully grown oak tree captures one tonne of carbon during the first 40 years of its lifetime. They live on average 150-250 years, reaching maturity at around 75, retaining the sequestered carbon even after they die. Then there are the additional benefits that every tree provides habitats for biodiversity and life giving oxygen for us to breathe.

Plus trees act as natural filters and regulators, cleaning air pollution and cooling urban heat islands (that’s where city centres are a few degrees warmer than surrounding areas due to human activity and the absorbent nature of man-made structures.)

Disease Prevention

By utilising locally gathered conkers, acorns, sweet chestnut and beech nuts, the Leeds Needs Seeds project avoids introducing diseases from other areas. This in turn improves the chances of each sapling successfully developing to fully grown adulthood.

Business and the Climate Crisis

Planting trees alone will not solve our climate crisis, but it will make a significant difference.  Accessing available technologies and encouraging behaviour change to achieve Net Zero by 2030 and the associated workplace benefitsare also essential elements in the mix.

What a fantastic initiative which benefits us locally in Leeds! A great activity for everyone - especially in these times where spending more time outside is beneficial for our own well being as well as doing something amazing for our local environment. Thanks for sharing Michelle!

I have been lucky in that all of my life, I have lived in the countryside and never been far away from woodland. Where I live now, we have a secret wood, that not many people know about, its a favourite spot of mine to escape from the madness of the world
