LEED forecast: What’s next for the LEED green building rating system and sustainability in buildings

The LEED green building rating system, developed by USGBC, has been a driving force in promoting sustainable building practices globally for 25 years. As we look to the future, we see five key trends and developments shaping the evolution of LEED and sustainability in the construction industry.

  1. Increased focus on embodied carbon

LEED v5, the newest version of the rating system, focuses on reducing embodied carbon and overall greenhouse gas emissions linked to the extraction, manufacturing, transportation, installation and disposal of materials. Expect to see credits and prerequisites related to embodied carbon assessment, reduction strategies and material selection. This will foster innovation in low-carbon materials and construction techniques.

2. Framework for decarbonization

LEED v5 offers a comprehensive and adaptable framework for reducing carbon emissions in buildings. Focusing on peak thermal loads, electrification, reduced on-site combustion, energy efficiency and renewable energy sources enables building professionals and occupants to make significant strides toward a sustainable future. The emphasis on performance and flexibility ensures that everyone can find a way to contribute to decarbonization, regardless of the type or location of their project.

3. Integration of health and well-being

LEED v5 continues to emphasize occupant health and well-being with an approach that allows for more customization of selected strategies addressing indoor air quality, thermal comfort, access to natural light and other factors related to occupant experience. New strategies include biophilic design, community connectivity and adaptable environments. This change will drive the creation of spaces that prioritize human health and well-being. The guidance is designed to be applicable to multiple space types and lay a foundation for spaces with which occupants want to engage.

4. Resilience and adaptation

As climate change impacts become more pronounced, LEED is integrating more measures to enhance building resilience and adaptability, both inside and outside of buildings. Requirements and strategies promote an understanding of climate risk, flood mitigation and extreme heat in order to withstand extreme weather events. This will help ensure that buildings can better face future challenges.

5. Human impact

LEED v5 emphasizes equity, urging projects to assess their effects on local communities and advocate for social justice. Expect a refined focus on affordable housing, access to public transportation and rewarding community engagement. These initiatives will promote the development of projects that benefit all members of society.

These five trends represent the next wave of innovation in green building. By adopting these advancements, the LEED rating system will remain essential in fostering a more sustainable and equitable built environment for future generations.
